Mental Ray Standalone 2011: ProductInformation.pit not found

I'm in the process of upgrading our renderfarm to MR Standalone 2011 and have installed the upgraded license (which shows up fine in the diagnostics on the server). Previously we ran SPM server with a hardware dongle, but now we have changed over to serve the licenses from the same daemon as our Maya floating licenses. Maya works fine by the way.

When I try to start ray from the command line I get this:
[root@stripe-001 autodesk]# /usr/autodesk/mentalray/bin/ray -verbose on
info: ld_library_path=/usr/autodesk/mentalray/bin::/opt/Autodesk/Adlm/R1/lib64
MSG .0 info : mental ray, version 3.8.1.28
MSG .0 info : use -copyright option to view copyright and terms of use.
MSG .0 error: ProductInformation.pit file not found
MSG .0 fatal: Sorry, no license available

I would assume this is related to ray not finding ProductInformation.pit which is located under the AdLM dir under bin, but copying the file into the bin dir doesn't help either.

Path is correctly set. LD_LIBRARY_PATH is "/usr/autodesk/mentalray/bin::/opt/Autodesk/Adlm/R1/lib64"

This is a bit of a showstopper for us so I would appreciate any tips of how to fix this!

Mental Ray Standalone is installed on a Dell 1950 with Fedora Core 12.

Thanks!

ProductInformation.pit file should be in /usr/autodesk/mrstand3.8.1-adsk2011-x64/bin/AdLM folder of the machine you installed mental ray standalone 3.8 and running ray command.
Could you please see it the file is there? If not, please copy it into that location.

The file is there. The thing that's confusing is that this file can be found more than one place; ie:

[root@stripe-001 ~]# locate ProductInformation.pit
/usr/autodesk/mrstand3.8.1-adsk2011-x64/bin/AdLM/ProductInformation.pit
/var/opt/Autodesk/Adlm/.config/ProductInformation.pit

These files are not identical. The first one is 2008 bytes and the second one is 6680 bytes.

We are seeing the same issue with our install.
Fedora 10 workstation talking to a windows XP license server.

We are running linux on both license server and render nodes.

I did a quick test on Friday where I installed Mental Ray Standalone on OS X (intel, 10.5.8) and it was up and running right away. This shows that there's nothing wrong with the license server or the license file at least.

My first test with OSX 10.5.6 did not work. Same error. I've opened a ticket with Autodesk.

Probably some differences between 10.5.6 and 10.5.8. Haven't tested 10.6.3 and MR Standalone yet, but I have tested Maya 2011 and it works fine.

I've also opened a ticket with Autodesk - I'll report back if we find a sollution.

This found the problem:
echo $MI_ROOT

points to an older install:
/usr/local/mi3.7.1

this fixed it:
unsetenv MI_ROOT Edited by: lumadev_mr on May 11, 2010 3:39 PM

Brilliant! That did the trick!

Even though I had the variable set to the correct path I needed to remove it for MR to work.

Thanks!
