Maya 2011 Mac OSX "error 20"

Hey everyone,

I was hoping that someone could help me get up and running with maya 2011. I’m an art student, and I downloaded Maya 2011 off the Autodesk website for use with school work in the fall, however, I’m having some issues. It installed fine (so far as I know, anyway), but when I try to open the program, I get the following message:

License was not obtained
Tried Maya 2011 (657C1 2011.0.0.F), error 20

License method:
environment variable MAYA_LICENSE_METHOD=’standalone’

Product choice:
environment variable MAYA_LICENSE=’unlimited’

License file override:
environment variable MAYA_ALT_EN is not set

I’ve searched high and low for an answer, but I haven’t come across one yet, despite two days of searching. I’m hoping someone here can help me with the solution. In case anyone has any idea what’s going on here, I’ll list my computer’s software and hardware specifications, etc.

MacBook Pro, mid-2009 unibody, 2.53 GHz intel core 2 duo, 4 gigs of ram, 256mb NVidia GeForce 9400M graphics card.

Currently, I am running OSX Snow Leopard, version 10.6.4, on a recently replaced 320 gig hard drive (fresh from apple yesterday).

I also have the serial number and activation codes for Maya, and as far as I know, I installed it all properly, which is why I’m stumped. A HUGE thanks in advance to anyone who can provide any help at all (even if it’s not much in your eyes, it’ll make a world of difference to me).

Also, as I’m a new member, I apologize if this has been discussed before, however I did a search and nothing came up for me. Additionally, I’ve read the user installation manual (it bears no specific mention of this problem/error) and I’ve scoured the Autodesk website to no avail. Seeing as all of these labours have fallen short of the mark, this post is as much a plea as a question, if you get my meaning!

Alright, I've made some discoveries.

I downloaded Hotfix 3, installed it, and then restarted. all of the files showed up as they should. Before I tried anything else, I wanted to test to see if Maya worked, and as usual, I got the "error 20" message. All of the files vanished again as well.

Then, I DIDN'T uninstall, but just restarted. Sure enough, once the computer restarted, the files showed up again.

I also couldn't find the /tmp/ files, where are they located?

I've had some weird things happen again:

First, after I restarted and got all of the files back, I was browsing around trying to find the requested items. Eventually (without me touching a single file), the folders disappeared again. I restarted, and all the files came back, so I tried again. I opened up the terminal, copy and pasted the code you posted: /Library/Application\ Support/FLEXnet\ Publisher/Service/11.7.0/FNPLicensingService -r

After I did that, the terminal window paused for a little while, and then was ready for a new prompt as if nothing had happened. I'd have an example to show you, but then all of the files disappeared again, so I figured I'd restart before posting anything (since I couldn't be sure whether or not nothing happened because of missing files or not).

And now I can't get the files to reappear again no matter what order I use to uninstall, install and restart. I don't get it! After 3 more attempts at installing and restarting, I'm just about ready to give in for today.

If, by chance, the files were in place when I entered the prompt, what would have happened if everything was working properly? I don't know whether it was a positive or negative sign that nothing happened, because on one hand I didn't get an error notice or anything, but on the other hand not much really happened. Ideas?

in terminal if you do

cd /tmp

ls

it should show all the files

I'm assuming you mean that it'll show the /tmp/ files and not the missing files?

Anyway, here's what popped up when I did as you said.

matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$ cd /tmp
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:tmp Home$ ls
icssuis501 launch-ZU3Gn8
launch-9TT1nk launchd-92.e6szjz

 EDIT: Also, I found this-

matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:tmp Home$ /tmp/Adlm.log
-bash: /tmp/Adlm.log: No such file or directory
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:tmp Home$ /tmp/Mayalicense.log
-bash: /tmp/Mayalicense.log: No such file or directory
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:tmp Home$ /var/system.log
-bash: /var/system.log: No such file or directory
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:tmp Home$ /applications/Autodesk/maya2011/license.env
-bash: /applications/Autodesk/maya2011/license.env: No such file or directory

I'll be honest in admitting I'm not the most tech savvy person, but I just ran with what you gave me (and  what I thought you meant in regard to finding the files), but it says that no such files exist. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Even if I am doing it right, it doesn't mean much because I CAN find the license.env file, which is within the packaged contents of the Maya icon. I already checked that out, and it's fine. This is what it looks like:

MAYA_LICENSE=Unlimited
MAYA_LICENSE_METHOD=Standalone

After running

/Library/Application\ Support/FLEXnet\ Publisher/Service/11.7.0/FNPLicensingService –r

Could you please try to get the  result of following command. If it returns more than 2 lines. Please try to start Maya. It should come up with a license repair screen

ps -ef | grep FNP

If you didnt get any result so far. we will try to do another clean up.

Delete the maya applications (2010 and 2011)

To uninstall Maya 2011 on Mac OS X follow these steps.
1 Navigate to the Maya directory (by default,/Applications/Autodesk/maya2011/).
2 Drag the maya2011 application to the trash.

Open Terminal and run follwing commands(you can copy and paste, please do it in the same order)

mkdir /tmp/bkup

cp  -r /Library/Application\ Support/Autodesk /tmp/bkup

rm -r /Library/Application\ Support/Autodesk

cp /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet\ Publisher/FLEXnet/adsk* /tmp/bkup

rm  /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet\ Publisher/FLEXnet/adsk*

then try to install Maya 2011 again. plelase let me know how it goes

After uninstalling, I entered the prompts you gave me. This is what was produced:

matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$ mkdir /tmp/bkup
mkdir: /tmp/bkup: File exists
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$ cp -r /Library/Application\ Support/Autodesk /tmp/bkup

rm -r /Library/Application\ Support/Autodesk

cp /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet\ Publisher/FLEXnet/adsk* /tmp/bkup

rm /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet\ Publisher/FLEXnet/adsk*
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$ rm -r /Library/Application\ Support/Autodesk
rm: /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/.config: Permission denied
override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/AAA201100F_EL_Adlm.asr?
cp /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet\ Publisher/FLEXnet/adsk* /tmp/bkup

rm /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet\ Publisher/FLEXnet/adsk*
override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/AAA201100F_EX_Adlm.asr? override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/AAA201100F_FL_Adlm.asr? override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/AAA201100F_TL_Adlm.asr? override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/ESEC201100F_EL_Adlm.asr?

I noticed that it said Permission denied, but that the code kept going, so I assumed it worked. I then re-installed Maya. The files haven't shown up, but I'll restart and see what happens. I'll check back in a few minutes and let you know what happened.

EDIT----------

Unfortunately, the files, didn't show up. I don't understand why this is happening, or why the files only sometimes show up. I've done exactly as you've asked, but the files still won't appear as they should. I'll try it again just to be 100% sure.

Alright, I tried again, and it worked (without restarting, too!).

I'll proceed with the other codes. . .

in reply to: Learil

Alright, so this is what happened.

Instead of using the normal terminal, I used the Maya terminal, and only dragged the Maya icon to the trash (the guide on the AREA forum said to drag the whole maya2011 folder).

I then entered the prompts that you gave me, left the terminal open, and re-installed. The files reappeared as they should, like I already said.

I then went back to the already open terminal, and entered the       /Library/Application\ Support/FLEXnet\ Publisher/Service/11.7.0/FNPLicensingService -r       code, and nothing happened that I could see. So I ented the next code:

ps -ef | grep FNP

Again, nothing happened that I could see. This is what it all looked like in the terminal:

. /Applications/Autodesk/maya2011/Maya.app/Contents/bin/MayaENV.sh
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$ . /Applications/Autodesk/maya2011/Maya.app/Contents/bin/MayaENV.sh
Welcome to the Autodesk Maya 2011 shell
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$ mkdir /tmp/bkup
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$ cp -r /Library/Application\ Support/Autodesk /tmp/bkup
matt-gilliss-macbook-pro:~ Home$ rm -r /Library/Application\ Support/Autodesk
rm: /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/.config: Permission denied
override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/AAA201100F_EL_Adlm.asr? cp /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet\ Publisher/FLEXnet/adsk* /tmp/bkup
override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/AAA201100F_EX_Adlm.asr? rm /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet\ Publisher/FLEXnet/adsk*
override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/AAA201100F_FL_Adlm.asr? /Library/Application\ Support/FLEXnet\ Publisher/Service/11.7.0/FNPLicensingService -r
override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/AAA201100F_TL_Adlm.asr? ps -ef | grep FNP
override rwxr-xr-x root/admin for /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/ASR/ESEC201100F_EL_Adlm.asr?

Now I'll try to open Maya to see what happens, but because I didn't get more than two lines from the "/Library/Application\ Support/FLEXnet\ Publisher/Service/11.7.0/FNPLicensingService -r" prompt, I don't think it'll open.

If it doesn't open, but I did something wrong in following your steps, please correct me. I don't want to put this method of fixing the program out of my mind until I know I tried it 100% correctly. Only if I/we know I did it 100% correct would I like to move on to any more ideas. I'll report back as to whether Maya opened or not in a minute.

Update:

Maya didn't open, and gave the same "error 20" message. As usual it deleted the folders. I'm going to try to un-install and re-install to get the folders back so that I can show exactly which folders are the missing ones.

I just wanted to pass on this information. After reading all of the posts about the install errors. I tries some of the solutions posted through this thread. They didn't work for me. But, what i did find out was this.

I just updated to snow leopard, mac os 10.6, after I received the 2011 suite. On my old system, I uninstalled Maya 2008 on the mac os 10.5.8. Then I went about reinstalling the new operating system. After reformating the drive and reinstalling the OS, three deifferent times trying to find the solution as to why the install was still getting the error, as posted above in the thread. I realized that I used the migration assistant for transfering my old files from my old OS. even when I didn't transfer the application files, I was still unable to start Maya 2011.

So, I realized something was attached to my old OS, my guess is it has to do with the 32 bit file structure, or a missed directed file from the old OS. I didn't locate the specific problem other than not using the migration assistant and transfering my files one by one. So, I only discovered that this was the culprit by not transfereing and getting 2011 to install and activate correctly. Just to make sure this was the problem.

After success with  my Maya 2011 activation and start up, I transfered the files using the Mac OS 10.6 transfer assistant, and Maya had the errors again and woulnd't start back up. So, I reinstalled everything without migration and everything is working great. I didn't mean to drag this on, but I wanted to relay the process to the Autodesk Team and the consumers.

Hope this helps,

Tony

Okay, this is helpful I think.

I downloaded Maya 2011 when I had OSX 10.5.8. My hard drive needed to be replaced, so I had it replaced and installed Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.4. At that point I imported all my files from a time machine backup.

This would mean that the Maya 2011 files technically came from my 10.5.8 system. However, what I don't understand is that I even tried re-downloading the .dmg file from Autodesk and re-installing, but it still didn't work. Wouldn't re-downloading the .dmg file fix any migration issues? Unless it was still using an old file from 10.5.8 because it didn't uninstall correctly or something. . . Every time I've un-installed Maya, I've left the other Maya related folders intact because they didn't uninstall with the Maya folder. There's three folders: Adlm,Composite 2011,and MatchMover 2011.

Could this be the problem, somehow?

Yet again, any help is appreciated!

The Activation you have was bound to the previous configuration. You will need to reactivate:

1. Rename the extension to these two Trusted Storage files to something like .bak, .old, or .was.

       /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet Publisher/FLEXnet/adskflex_00691b00_tsf.data

       /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet Publisher/FLEXnet/adskflex_00691b00_tsf.data_backup.001

2. Then restart Maya and other Autodesk applications you might have, then go through the activation process.

If it reactivates and is working you can delete the original Trusted Storage files.

Let us know how this works out.

I restarted and re-installed, and seemingly got all my files back, but my Library/Preferences/FLEXnet/ folder is empty for some reason?

Also, here's some photos to illustrate what I'm talking about:

Empty FLEXnet Publisher:

Library Configuration after "correct" install. I'll post another picture later if/when the files "disappear" again.

Lastly, here's the arrangement of the files in the "Application Support" folder. Again, if/when the files disappear, I'll post up a picture to show the difference.

I was just wondering if I could get some advice on what to do about the empty FLEXnet Publisher folder? If it has the files that I need to fix the problem, and the files are gone, than is there a way to get the files back?

Will re-downloading the .dmg file fix anything? I had already re-downloaded it after the install of the new OSX, but maybe doing it again will fix something?

I called the end user and resolved the issue by:

  • Deleting folders as noted in the post in discussion.
                /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/
                /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet Publisher/FLEXnet/
  • Installed as Trial first using 000-00000000.
  • Ran Maya as Trial.
  • Then registered afterwards by choosing Activate instead of Try.

Hello,

I have the same problem. Trying to install and activate my students license of Maya 2011 on my Mac OSX 10.6.4.

Whe ntrying a normal install I had the 'error 20' message. Same thing when trying trial (00-0000...).

Interesting thing happens when I delete the Adlm folder in Applications/Autodesk (I don't have that folder in my library). When I star Maya it loads loads loads and then it stops. The program icon is active, but the program itself is dead - nothing happens. Also - no error window...

Still waiting for any fix or suggestions from Autodesk Support Team. I really am interested in Maya, but this problems are taking to long to solve...

Oh, and buy a PC is not a solution, so don't write it 😜

Delete the following folders:

            /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/
            /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet Publisher/FLEXnet/

            /Applications/Autodesk/Maya2011

Then re-install it using 000-00000000 as the serial number so that it will run in Trial mode.   Then run it once in trial mode.  Exit Maya and restart it and then try to register.

Hello David,

I tried to do exactly what you wrote in your both previous mails, but:

- before installing Maya 2011 (and after) I didn't have any of those in my Library:

  /Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Adlm/

  /Library/Preferences/FLEXnet Publisher/FLEXnet/

was searching for it with Spotlight but to no avail. After installation the Adlm folder is in my Applications/Autodesk/Adlm directory.

So I installed Maya 2011 using trial serial number 000-00000000 but then still - this window appeared again:
