Max 2012 doesn't run, nothing happens

Greetings!

I just installed Max 2012 on a computer at work, but when I attempt to launch it, nothing happens.

Well, not exactly nothing - the 3dsmax.exe process appears in the Task Manager for approximately 2 seconds and then disappears.

I found this thread which mentioned that Max is having trouble finding the license - can anybody give me any help in resolving the issue?

You might post your adlm log and see if there are any errors in it.  It's likely a licensing error.

Where would I find that log?

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\AdLM

Hopefully it will shed some light on the problem.

Hmm, I'm not seeing anything in that folder that looks like a log.  I found a file inside the R4 folder in there, but that appears to be the log of my what-the-heck attempt at entering the serial number in the License Transfer Utility:

4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	Reason=Fatal error
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	ComputerName=XXXXXX
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	OS=6.1.7601.Service Pack 1
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	File=ltuManager.cpp,Line=165
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	VendorID=2 [ADLMACT]
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	VendorError=2 [An operation is cancelled]
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	Reason=Fatal error
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	ComputerName=STEVEG
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	OS=6.1.7601.Service Pack 1
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	File=ltuManager.cpp,Line=166
4300	2013/08/19	10:32:33	LTUError=1 [LTU import or export failed]

There are also a handful of "3DSMAX2012*.asr" files in the ASR folder, but they don't appear to be modified since 2010, so I doubt those are the right files.

Do you have a ProductInformation.pit file?

Yes, I do.  It appears to be a binary file, so I'll jsut attach it to this post (with the extension changed, since the forum won't let me attach a .pit file).

I was going to recommend renaming that file and then reinstalling the
software.

Ah, I jumped the gun on that.

Unfortunately, renaming that file and letting the 2012 installer create a new one didn't fix the issue either. It actually had the bonus of causing a previously working Max 2010 install to error out with a "LIcense Checkout Failed" error. Restoring the original ProductInformation.pit file fixed the 2010 issue, but the 2012 issue continues.

The log file shows 'LTU import or export failed', did you try to export or import the standalone license? Maybe the ADLM trusted storage file has been corrupted. Please try this solution, see if works for you.
