License server services stops handing out licenses

Hello all,

We have here a network with a Windows 2000 SP2 server and 10 AutoCAD 2002 sp1 Windows 2000 workstations.

The last month the server stopped 2 times (both times on different day) to hand-out licenses only a restart of the server and reconfiguration of where the license file can be found brings the license server back online.

The license server has been set as services so when the server is logged off the license server is still active.

I checked the ADLMerror log files the only thing in there that seems odd is that the license server gives the next lines and than users cannot start AutoCAD in the morning.

Some info from the logfile
16:14:44 (adskflex) IN: "41100ACD_2002_0F" @8008CKH81982
16:15:19 (adskflex) IN: "41100ACD_2002_0F" @@8014CYH20187
16:31:50 (adskflex) IN: "41100ACD_2002_0F" @@8014CYH20187
@(adskflex) IN: "41100ACD_2002_0F" mvanderheijden@8005CKH80274
20:21:51 (lmgrd) TIMESTAMP 8/15/2002
2:21:52 (lmgrd) TIMESTAMP 8/16/2002

I saw that the server uses some batchfiles to gather all the kind of data from different servers. Those batchfiles use the command XCOPY. But they are executed every day.

When the users logon the network in the morning they get the message that the license server cannot be found.

Thanks for the response.

Hi,

just an idea;

do you have a virus protection thingamaling running on the server? I so, try
removing this directory from the Virus realtime checking:

C:\flexlm

Yes, C: and FLEXLM! You might not have noticed this directory, check that
this has all rights for SYSTEM!

Also check on the server if these 2 ports aren't being either closed or used
by another program.

Joel,

In the event of failure is there any other activity
in the log file after the time stamps?  If there is not it means that the
workstations are not getting to the license server at all.  Since FLEXlm
will generate log entries if it shuts down due to errors, your problem is likely
limited to one of the following conditions:

An error condition so severe that FLEXlm is stopped
abruptly without an opportunity of logging the event.  This is unlikely and
I have not seen such a case yet.  I can see this happening if the system
were to run out of resources and could explain why you have to
reconfigure.

Something has gone wrong network wise to cause the
license server to become unreachable by the workstations.  This is my
'guess' of the problem at this point.

Check the system event viewer for errors that may
provide clues.  Also try to ping the license server by name and IP address
from the workstations while the system is failed.  Pay attention to the IP
address echoed to be sure that the correct machine is actually being
pinged.  Also try the same thing from server to workstations.  You
should also note if you are able to stop the license manager using
LMtools.  If you get an error 'can not stop FLEXlm' then it is likely that
FLEXlm has already stopped.  After stopping it or finding it stopped, will
it start?  Keep in mind that during normal operation "Stopping Server" and
Starting Server" messages in LMtools are not updated unless an error condition
is detected.   In other words a continuous message saying "stopping
server" means that the stop server worked.

Well the virus scanner is scanning the C:\Flexlm directory so i'm going to exclude this from the list to see if anything changes.

The other item that is that the Flexlm logfile gives as last line the new timestamp and nothing more no error not even a blank space.

I checked the eventviewer but no error where recorded or logged. It might be that the server is out of resources but going to look into that too.

Thanks for the replies Petri and Jerry.

I will update this post if i have found the right solution or method for this problem

Did any one try to run between the times of the
time stamps?  If they did and failed it indicates that the license manager
was alive and waiting but the request never got to it.  Have you tried
pinging the license server from the workstations (first by name then by IP
address) while the system is in failure state?  If you do and ping fails
you are looking for a network problem.

It seems that the problem was solved when we turned off the virus realtimescanning on the directory C:\Flexlm
