License Problems

We have a network version of AutoCAD 2002 on our e-mail server so that all our offices have access to AutoCAD.

When a drawing is open or created we will sometimes get an error that the file is in use by and is read only. How does this happen when I’m the only one using the file? It is as if I have lost connection and have been given a different license so I have to save the drawing with a different name quit AutoCAD, closing the file still has it locked, use Windows Explorer to rename the file to what it was supposed to be.

The behavior you are describing has nothing to do
with licensing.  This is a file handling issue that is usually caused by
performance problems or third party network software.  If your server is
slower than your workstation and/or your server becomes very busy at the time of
a save attempt, your server may not process AutoCAD's network calls fast
enough.  This can lead to a condition where a request to delete or rename a
file is made by AutoCAD while the server has not processed a prior release lock
request on that file.  Once that happens, the file is generally flagged
read-only until you log off and back on the workstation.  Some third party
software has been known to totally drop AutoCAD's OS compliant calls to release
locks or significantly delay the call, all with similar resulting
behavior.
