License Manager fails after installing MS updates

I'm having a problem, the previously running License manager has
suddenly quit working. The service attempts to start up but fails to
complete startup. It appears to be starting hundreds of copies of
ADSKFLEX.EXE. The server slows to a crawl (since there are hundreds of
copies of ADSKFLEX.exe) and I have no choice but to kill the License
manager service which stops creating processes, all the copies of
adskflex die and everything comes back to life.

I installed 2 new Microsoft hotfixes 810847 and 811630 on a Win2k
server, other than that I have made no changes to the server that I can
recall. There is no uninstall for either of these, so I don't
positively know that they are the culprit. They don't appear to affect
anything that ACAD should be using...

I've tried re-installing license manager, but the symptoms persist. I
tried turning on logging and get the following: (I've included only the
start of the file, it goes on the same way over and over again).

Any help over the weekend would be appreciated, otherwise I'll be
rattling ACAD's cages first thing in the morning Monday when our CAD
operators can't work.

Bill,

First, make sure there are no instances of LMGRD ot ADSKFLEX running on your
server.
Now make a copy of the folder c:\flexlm (just in case)
Then delete the folder c:\flexlm
Now reboot

If everything begins to work again, you had a stale lock file.

Jerry,

I already tried that, didn't help at all. All the LMGRD and ADSKFLEX
processes were shut down. I completely deleted the flexlm directory and
let adskflex re-create it, no joy.

Bill,

Have you installed any firewall or similar software? This sort of "daemon
storm" has been known to be caused by applications stepping on FLEXlm's
ports or intentionally blocking them. Firewall and internet security type
applications have been the most common offenders. Both LMGRD and ADSKFLEX
use IANA registered port numbers but there have occasions where other
applications have used or blocked them anyway.

Jerry,

No, I haven't installed anything except the two patches mentioned in my
original posting. The server is behind our firewall, so it doesn't have
anything firewall like on it. It's been FLEXlm for about two years, so
it isn't some recent change. I ran across an article in the KB
regarding port use, according to netstat nothing is using its ports.

Go into LMTOOLS and uncheck START SERVICE AT POWER UP and save the service.
Reboot the server.
Go the task mgr and make sure there are no instances of lmgrd running.
If there are, you have another service FLEX service configured somewhere.
If not, start the Autodesk FLEX service.
It should start with just one instance.

Nope, try again, there are not multiple instances of lmgrd running,
lmgrd is acting up and starting bunches of Autodesk FLEX processes.
Autodesk's stuff is the only thing on the server that uses lmgrd, and
there is only one configured instance.

Try this:

Edit your license using Note Pad. delete the "2080" value on the ADSKFLEX
line and try to start the license manager. If it works then you know
something is stepping on port 2080. Also, I notice that LMGRD is using
27010. This is very uncommon. LMGRD usually tries every port from 27000
through 27009. Are you hard coding the LMGRD port? If not, I would suspect
some kind of conflicting software.

I will be traveling this week so my response times are likely to be slow.
