LDD R2i Slow Clients - Autodesk?

I posted an LDD R2i client deployement installation problem earlier this
week with no response. The problem concerns installing an LDD R2i client to
a Win98SE computer from a client deployment on an NT4.0sp5 server. These
particular machines are new Pentium 4 based systems that have not had
previous AutoCAD installations. No other software was running at the time
of installation - including anti-virus programs. When I initially posted to
this forum concerning this problem it appeared that the installation was
frozen, but it turns out that it was working though proceding very slowly.
On two of these computers it took two hours to install LDD R2i and 35
minutes to install CD R2i. Since the service packs for these programs run
the network installation wizard they too took an abnormally long time to
run. On two older computers (one a P2 and one a P3 that both had previous
LDD 2 installations) it took 12 minutes to install LDD R2i and 4 minutes to
    install CD R2i.

From what I could follow during the installation it appeared that a large
amount of installation time was spent copying the LDD "\Land Desktop
R2\Data" folder which contains project prototypes, text styles, menu
palettes, etc. The client deployment setup was configured to install these
files to a network location rather than to the client machine. This allows
users to access the same company standards and has worked well for prior
versions of LDD on this same network. It would be simpler to install the
"\Land Desktop R2\Data" folder once and not include it in all other
installations, but this option is not available in the installation
selections. Rebuilding the client deployment setup on the network server
with a client drive installation selected for the "\Land Desktop R2\Data"
resulted in much quicker program installation times - 5.5 minutes for LDD
R2i and 1 minute for CD R2i. With this installation location it is
necessary to manually modify each client installation to point to the "\Land
Desktop R2\Data" folder located on the network.

Now that these installations are up and running there appear to be speed
issues with certain operations such as opening the Options dialog and using
the Terrain Model Explorer (accesses project data also stored in a network
location). Though I have not seen posts here similar to my installation
problems I have seen complaints of slow response time for AutoCAD 2000i.
Can Autodesk or other users suggest any remedies?

    Thanks,

    Brendan

    Brendan -

I'm grasping at straws here, but try these just in case...
Make sure that you have the latest patches for LDD (It sounds like you
already do and for some reason I can't get to autodesk's support site
tonight to see if there are any late breaking service packs)
Make sure that you have the latest driver for your network card. I've heard
of a lot of problems related to win98 and network card drivers mis-behaving.
Make sure that you have the latest driver for your video card. There's
about a 0% chance that it's anything related to your video card, but it's
one of the things that is always asked.
Do you have an av program running now? If yes try disabling it and see if
    performance improves.
    Sorry I'm not more help.

Thanks for the response Jason. I found that Norton AV was to blame and
didn't check back here to see if anyone had posted a response. We run
McAfee on all our machines and these new computers came with NAV installed.
From what I could tell, all NAV functions were turned off, but it actually
took uninstalling NAV completely from the machine to allow LDD to work
properly. Your hunch about AV was right on target.

Again, thanks for responding. I have been very disappointed by the lack of
"any" response from Autodesk moderators on this network newsgroup. This is
the second or third network question I have posted here in the last few
months to which there was no response at all from Autodesk. I usually
answer the questions myself after spending valuable time troubleshooting the
software. I still remember how invaluable the CompuServe forums were in the
earlier days of AutoCAD - too bad Autodesk doesn't as well.

    Regards,

    Brendan
