Is a server OS required

we have a network of 6 computers running windows XP pro and vista.we just got Autodesk revit 2009; architecture suite with 5user license. do we need to have a server operating system(windows server 2003) to run autodesk on our Network.

No. Any peer on the network will suffice.

Keep in mind that Windows Professional clients have a maximum of 10 concurrent connections. Since you have fewer machines than this, you should just fine on a peer-to-peer workgroup.
