    Hi there,

I was wondering if there are any setting within AUTOCAD 14 that allow
for inactivity settings. I'm asking this because we have users who use up
licenses from our server and walk away from their desks and leave ACAD open,
then when actual CAD users need to use the program and we are out of lic.
they cannot work. What I'm thinking is if ACAD had away of detecting say
10min of inactivity it would save the drawing and exit the program,
releasing the license and allowing other people to work.

    Hi,

yes, you can do this by implementing a socalled Network License Manager Resource
    File
. It's really quite easy to do, but as with it you can control a multitude of
things (who cannot use a license, which workstation can't etc) it takes some
time to learn. The instructions are at:

    http://www.autodesk.com/support/techdocs/td15/td154044.htm

    HTH,

No. You cannot do this with AdLM, period. What you are thinking about in
the resource file (this can also be done through the GUI) is the "hold
time". What this does is if a user closes AutoCAD and the "hold time"
setting is set to 10 minutes, then the AdLM server will hold that license
for that user for 10 minutes. This would allow a user to reboot their
machine and not lose their license.

If you want to control the licenses better than the AdLM can, you need a
third party program to do so. Here is an copy of a post in the "Taking
back licenses if there is inactivity" thread.

    Hi Jacob,

we are using the licensing software KeyServer from Sassafras
(www.sassafras.com). The AdLM controlls the numbers of licenses and the
KeyServer checks if the program is idle for a specified time.

    Hope this will help you.

No problem. I wish that you could do this with AdLM out of the box. If
you can "Bury" a client without them losing data (someone correct me here
if I am wrong), then why can't you have it setup so that the AdLM can
automatically pull a license? If they are worried about added network
overhead from AutoCAD and the AdLM having to constantly communicate then
why don't they it setup so that AutoCAD (if it is in use) sends a message
to the AdLM server at a percentage of whatever the "timeout" setting is.
Or have it the other way around and have AutoCAD only respond back to the
AdLM server if it is being used. Maybe on the next release. :-)

    I agree Kevin!

I mean what would be the actual nw overhead be using TCP/IP, I mean most of
the users are already on the i-net and no-one is complaining (except maybe
    the topbrass)?
