Help Please!! What is ESORT??

For quite some time now I have noticed an unusual phenomenon that occurs
with AutoCAD when accessing documents or blocks across the network. This is
consistent across Windows OSs and from ACAD 2000i and 2002. We have a
network, running Win 2K, and my workstation is W2K with ACAD 2002 installed
on my C drive. I work on the C drive, save to the C drive, but our release
directory and block library is on the network.

What happens is that after accessing files stored on the network or
inserting blocks stored on the network, the program begins to exhibit an
intermittent lock-up, lasting about half a second. You can make circles
with your mouse/cursor, and see it stop and start. This is quite annoying
when you are trying to edit. If you close ACAD and reopen it, the problem
stops. I D/L-ed the program File Monitor in the hopes of catching what goes
on when this occurs. What I saw, repeating every time I moved the mouse, is
reproduced below. NOTE: The file referenced in the log below (drawing
042794nc.dwg) was CLOSED when this was happening, I was no longer in the
file. Can anyone explain what is going on and how to stop it?

I've posted a similar question some time ago...
We have monitored the network activity on this and found up to 1000
hits(broadcasts) per second in extreme cases.
Using more advanced net monitor eqipment we have found that the file
searched for is ESORTdwf in 2002 and ESORT.ac$ in R14... The lookup for
this file is continious, you actually just have to activate the drawing to
trigger its activity!

If you use a 'clean' 2002 drawing, inserting a 'clean' 2002 block it seems
that you can save your file on a network drive without the traffic. But we
haven't got to test this enough to make a clear picture!

We are two big users in Norway and Sweden that connects about 3-400 users in
two separate networks.
Anyone with a calculator can make a suggestion on how much extra activity
this causes on our networks!

Autodesk is probably aware of the problem, but it would be nice to hear from
others with the same problem or from Autodesk if they have a solution or a
patch for this...

For the time beeing I've not deared to tell the network people about this,
if I do I'm sure they will shut down all activity until the reason has been
found and the error is corrected...

I saw your post below, and also saw that it received the same response that
mine did. I also posted the question into the general 2002 discussion
group. No responses.

This problem can start t any time after a file has been accessed. The file
that is the subject of the ESORT malady can be open or closed. A file might
have been accessed a half hour previous to the start of the ESORT barrage.
The ESORT malady can also be focused on my local drive, which is where I do
most of my work. Once the ESORT thing is triggered, any movement of the
mouse triggers a barrage of ESORT-related activity.

It affects every workstation that runs ACAD 2002 here. That it might affect
one workstation is one too many!

Who do we contact about this?

What are your settings as far as the Internet related settings? Things like; turning off the today window? What have you looked at so far?

Just curious, and concerned since we are cosidering going to 2002.

I access Today only when I want to.  Do you
have some reason to suspect a bug in Today?

Oh, as for looking at other things, all I have
gotten from anyone with regard to the ESORT bug is shrugs.  You
can see the response here.  Usually when a question is unanswered, it means
no one knows how to answer it.

My question now is:  Who can I write to at
Autodesk?  Who can I ask?  Who would know what this ESORT thing
is?

You should be concerned with this, as should anyone
with a network.

well I am definitly interested. I would turn off all internet connectivity settings and see if it goes away.

A couple of questions...

Are you running the Network License manager?
Have you seen this on any standalone versions?

I don't use the internet with Autocad.  If I
want to access the Autocad website, I go to Point A with Internet
Explorer.  I do not use Today.

One observation I just made.  I had two
drawings open.  Both are located on my local drive.  Using the File
Monitor utility, there were, at the time, no ESORT-type activity.  I had
printed a layout from one of the drawings, then saved and closed it.
Suddenly, the ESORT thing began, linking back to the folder that contained the
drawing I'd just closed!  It continues now, anytime I  move my mouse
in the remaining open drawing.  If that drawing were on the network, think
of all the bandwidth I'd be wasting!  Any autocad experts here wanna
guess what is happening?

I dunno.  I can tell you that each workstation
is set up with it's own copy of Autocad, and each one is licensed during the
install individualy.  We do not have any kind of "blanket" license.
Sorry, I'm not hip on all the license lingo, I just use the program.

>>>

Would our installs be considered
standalone?

Have I answered your questions?  Any way we
could try to focus on this would be greatly appriciated!

There are three different ways to install and run AutoCad.

1. 'Standalone' - Where all program files are local on the PC and the authorization code is put in for each installation.
2. 'Network Licensed' - Where all program files are local but the authorization is handed out by a network license manager. You can have 10 seats of AutoCad and install it on a 100 PCs, but only 10 at a time can use AutoCad.
3. 'Network Version' - All program files and licenses are on the network. Licenses are handed out as stated above.

The terms that I use are my terms to try to explain...
Hope that helps...

Sounds like your install is standalone.
Thanks for the example, that helps me to understand the issue better.

....sure is quiet on this subject....Jason? Jerry? you there?
