HELP!!Drawings Become RO for No reason!!!

I hope someone knows or might have had this happen to them. If anyone
has any information it would be GREATLY appreciated.

We have just updated 8 of your engineering computers from 350 PIII to
600 PIII and installed Autocad 2000 onto them once again. Currently we
work on a network but do not use a network Version of AutoCAD. AutoCAD
resides on our local computers. Our drawings lie on a File server and
the Engineers have Full access to the drawing on the Server.

Our problem is very sporatic. It currently happens to 3 out of the 8
people. While in a drawing (which is opened w/ full control), when the
drawing is ready to be saved, a message pops up in the Autocad drawing &

states that the drawing was opened prior to this save by another session

of autocad. & now the drawing Becomes Read ONLY for no reason.

We have checked everyone on the NET & they are not in the drawing Only
    the one person.

We have Windows NT installed on the File Server & Windows 98 installed
    on all the Engineers computers.

Does anyone have any IDeas what could be changing the User's drawings to

    RO.

Shaan Hurley from the AutoCAD 2000 General help told me to Make sure
service Pack was installed (Already did that 1 month ago), make sure
that the Graphics acceleration was not set to FULL. Is there any other
light you can shed on this Matter???????

    Please HELP!!!!

    Dean,

When you do a SAVE in AutoCAD, AutoCAD sends the server a request to release
the lock it had placed on the dwg file, then deletes is and renames the
working copy of the file to a dwg file of the original name. False read
only errors occur when AutoCAD's request to release the lock gets dropped or
lost. They will also happen if the server takes too long to process the
drop lock request. In any of these cases, AutoCAD's request to delete the
file arrives at the server with the lock still in place on the dwg file.
Usually when this happens between windows workstations and a windows server
the problem is server performance related. I would also make sure that the
Network Card Drivers on your Win 98 systems are the most current available.

My cards are BRAND New & the server hasn't changed from my previouse machine.
We didn't have this problem on our machines that were 6months old now these 8
new computers (supposedly faster) have the problem. We use 10/100mip cards the
servers have (2) 10/100mip cards which are combined to make 200mip cards. There
is now speed degregation there w/ the nik cards. This seems to be a problem
everyone is having from NT---netware. I don't like the Idea of saving the files
to hard drive that isn't acceptable.

There should be no reason why we would loose our Full access to our drawings. I
guess I need to sacrifice our new computer speeds & go back to the older
    machines.

    Dean,

I wish I had a dollar for every time I have heard "My cards are BRAND New"
and found that in fact the drivers shipped on the media supplied with the
card was out of date. I have also seen defective OS loads and service packs
applied improperly on "BRAND New" computers.
Now, if the problem only began with the new workstations, isn't it worth
making sure that all of your drivers are the latest available? I would also
check to see if a BIOS update is available for your systems.

Well the news is when we built these New computers we went directly to the NIC
card web sites & downloaded the New update drivers. SO i Guarntee the drivers
    are NEW I helped personally.

Now the BIOS we didn't do anything with that we could check that one out.

BUT, to throw a new twist on this subject. I just recieved a call from another
of my engineers. He works on His computer directly. Doesn't access his
drawings over the Network @ all. ONly thing the network is for for him is
Email. His hard drive isn't shared so NO ONE but him has access. All of his
drawings opened in his AUTOCAD session have just turned to RO. Now there is no
one w/ access to open his drawings.

Now the Nic drivers should affect that machine since everything is local. So
what feed back should we proceed w/ on that machine. The problem is the same.
Have you heard anything about the new motherboards w/ Intel 820 chipsets??? Is
this a possiblity??? The only thing different between these comps & last ones is
    a
    600mhz Chip new chip set
    256meg Ram
    & VX1 Oxygen graphics card.

Nics are same but w/ updated drivers from web sites.
    Monitors same

But what i've seen on these discussion groups is ALOT are having the same
problem & it is very frustrating dealing w/ it.

    Visit http://www.intel.com/support/mth for details.

I just set up a network with five machines with Intel CC820 motherboards,
and I have to go back and replace all five motherboards with either the
VC820 or an ASUS or ABIT compatible.

Thanx maybe this is one reason why we are having the problems on these new
machines when we had the previous machines there wen't any RO problems I'll do
some research on my end & do a test study to see if they are steming from that
    MTH issue.

I really appreciate the insight thanx alot.

So far this is only lead i've got. I know it's not what Jerry's been saying
because I was there personally installing the correct drivers for my Nic cards,
graphic cards & other hardware only thing We didn't make uptodate was the bios &
now w/ this chipset problem maybe might have hit on something.
