Error 20

Hello everyone,

Someone in the Area discussion group recommended me to post this here. I have a problem. When I try to start my trial version of 3ds max design I get the following error:

“Software License Checkout failed. Error 20”

Now, I have tried multiple ways to fix this already. I already renamed the cascade file in the adlm folder, I even moved the file to another location (It does not recreate the file afterward eitherway). I also changed the FLEXLM service from manual to automatic and vice versa, still no progress. I also reinstalled several times as well.

Does someone know if there is another way to fix this? I bought this computer from someone at school and I’m trying to install the trial version of 3ds max design in it. I have reason to believe the previous owner had a copy of either 3ds max or 3ds max design, so if everything fails is there any way to remove previous licenses so I can install this as a trial at least? I think that is what is causing the problem.

Furthermore, 3ds max won’t even start and crashes at launch. However, I don’t get the license error with this software.

Thank you for your time.

PS. This is a laptop btw, and I'm trying to install a stand alone trial license I don't think the previous owner used it with network liceneses either. Edited by: hvillagran on Apr 2, 2010 3:36 PM

If Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk 3ds Max Design were previously installed as a trial and that trial period has completed there may not be much we can do to undo that.

Try this:

  • 1. Completely uninstall all Autodesk software by following this Technical Solution:

http://support.autodesk.com/getdoc.asp?id=TS45252

  • 2. Re-Install Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk 3ds Max Design as Stand-Alone.
  • 3. Test Start Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk 3ds Max Design.

What is the result?

That uninstall link, http://support.autodesk.com/getdoc.asp?id=TS45252, is gone and redirects to a home page that offers no information about this topic.

P.S. I am having the same problem, Error 20, and I have spent HOURS trying to find anything about it on Autodesk.com, and there doesn't seem to be a solution.  Once Autodesk has your money, it's very hard to get help from them.  The Live Chat option seems to never be available once they have your $.

Follow the information as I pointed out in this posting: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/installation-licensing/import-request-fail/m-p/6024203#M122422
