Convert AutoCAD 2000 license server to a Virtual Machne now license server probs

I've recently used VMware conterver to convert our ancient Windows NT4 SP6 AutoCAD 2000 license server into a virtual machine. During the conversion process, the network card had to be changed.

Now when attempting to connect to that virtual license server, AutoCAD comes back with the "FATAL ERROR: Security system (hardware lock or network license) is not functioning or is improperly installed" error message.

The log on the server shows:
7-May-30 09:35:39: Peer registered: "leonardo" 000c297ca39d c0a80222 192.168.2.34 192.168.2.34.

07-May-30 09:35:39: Authorization failure; key C:\AutoCAD Licence Manager\KEY\150.lic only valid for: leonardo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Marty

Re-Authorize the software now that the network card has been changed.

Allen, thanks.

Forgive the question, but how do I reauthorize the software?

Ask your Autocad supplier, or Autodesk directly.
- You might also read the license agreement. At least at one stage in
history that didn't allow running on a virtual machine.

Hi,

Launch Adlm Admin from the Start Menu or winadmin.exe from C:\Program
Files\AdLM.
You will find a server code to give to autodesk to authorize your product.
Server code is based on one of the three elements : Mac adress, Server Name
or IP adress.

Get a new license file either through the web site, by phone, email or
through your reseller.

If you know the MAC address of the old network card, you can change the MAC
address for the VM to match. (as long as the old machine is no longer in use
in the same network subnet)

That's a great suggeston.

I tried using this article to change the address: http://www.vmware.com/support/gsx3/doc/network_macaddr_gsx.html but it didn;t work, It says it's not a valid address.

Any idea on how to do it?

Thanks,

Marty

I've never liked the idea of the NLM on a VMWare machine. Doesn't make sense. There is such a low footprint and overhead, it should always be on a real server.

I think the advantage of running a virtual server is if the server goes down, you can set everything up on a different box, use the same address, and you are back up and running without having to wait to get all new license files.

While this works good in theory it's not like that in practice. There is a
security aspect of this.
Who can tell if a server is down or if the virtual copy is really used to
duplicate your licenses?
For this reason it's not always possible to run the license manager in a VM.
However this is different from running the applications in a VM which should
be perfectly fine ... as long as they use network licenses.

Henrik Goldman

In our case we have several license servers all serving multiple different licenses for different software. If one goes down, we would need a new box and then contact each company for a new license file. That could take a fair amount of time before the licenses are available to the client users. The VM approach would speed that up significantly. I have had numerous occasions where getting a license file, even from Autodesk, is not always a 5 minute task. What happens if the license server goes down over the weekend? Not every software company offers 24/7 license support. It is for these reasons that being able to "re-use" the license file on a new box would be a benefit.

Of course there are those out there that would do exactly what you say and use the idea to run multiple servers using the same license file.

You can just move the NIC to another server; that's all the license locks to
(usually). And there are distributed and redundant configurations
available.

Virtual machines open up the possibility of threatening the security of the
environment that the license is locked to.
