Can't open c:\flexlm\lmgrdl.xxx, errno: 3

I just installed AutoCAD 2002 on a win2k server with 'Client and Autodesk License Manager Installation' option.
After configured the license server with the lmtools utility, the following messages shown in the 'debug.log':
8:25:26 (lmgrd) -----------------------------------------------
8:25:26 (lmgrd) Please Note:
8:25:26 (lmgrd)
8:25:26 (lmgrd) This log is intended for debug purposes only.
8:25:26 (lmgrd) There are many details in licensing policies
8:25:26 (lmgrd) that are not reported in the information logged
8:25:26 (lmgrd) here, so if you use this log file for any kind
8:25:26 (lmgrd) of usage reporting you will generally produce
8:25:26 (lmgrd) incorrect results.
8:25:26 (lmgrd)
8:25:26 (lmgrd) -----------------------------------------------
8:25:26 (lmgrd)

8:25:52 (lmgrd) MULTIPLE "adskflex" servers running.
8:25:52 (lmgrd) Please kill, and run lmreread
8:25:52 (lmgrd)
8:25:52 (lmgrd) This error probably results from either:
8:25:52 (lmgrd) 1. Another copy of lmgrd running
8:25:52 (lmgrd) 2. A prior lmgrd was killed with "kill -9"
8:25:52 (lmgrd) (which would leave the vendor daemon running)
8:25:52 (lmgrd) To correct this, do a "ps -ax | grep adskflex"
8:25:52 (lmgrd) (or equivalent "ps" command)
8:25:52 (lmgrd) and kill the "adskflex" process

I didn't have any experience with AutoDesk product, any help will be appreciated!

Jonathan -
That's a new one. Okay, it looks like the problem starts with the Can't open
c:\flexlm\lmgrdl.3EC, errno:3 line.
I have no idea what a 3EC file is about but the lmgrdl is an exe file. The FlexLM
documentation doesn't have an error code for 3. All the error codes (that are published)
are negative values.

Okay. Have you shut down and re-started the server?? It sounds like the service failed to
start and everything is confused. Have you gotten this repeatedly on the server?? If so
check permissions to the folder where the adlm has been installed and check the
permissions for the flexlm service. Make sure that the permissions on the service have
rights to the folder to which flex is installed.

Post back and let us know what happens.

Okay, I just thought of something. When you are configuring the FlexLM license manager you
have to specify the path the lmgrdl.exe. Open lmtools.exe and click on the configure
services radio button, then click on the Configure Services Tab. There is a textbox with a
Browse command button next to it labeled Path to the lmgrd.exe file. Make sure that it is
pointing to the correct location and hasn't gotten mucked up somehow.

Hi Jason,
Thanks for your help!
I used the default path(i.e. c:\program files\Autodesk License Manager) during the installation and they look OK.
I don't understand why 'c:\flexlm' was referenced in the log file and how did it get created?
I manually created 'c:\flexlm' directory and copied lmgrd.exe and adskflex.exe into it, but still got the same result. Any idea will be appreciated.

Launch lmtools.exe and click on the "configure using services" radio button, and then the
"configure services" tab. There is a text box labeled "Path to the lmgrd.exe file". What
does it say there???

Jason,
It says 'C:\Program Files\Autodesk License Manager\lmgrd.exe'

Okay, I'm punting here. Make a copy of your license file somewhere. Launch lmtools.exe.
"Configure using Services" -> "Start / Stop / Reread" tab -> "Stop Server". "Configure
Services" tab -> "Remove Service" -> "Yes". Close lmtools.exe. Uninstall the adlm
(start -> settings -> control panel -> add/remove programs). Boot the server.
Re-install adlm following the outline here
www.fsb-ae.com/acadnetwork/acadnetworkfaq.htm#3c .

Let us know if it happens again.

Arrrrrggggg - :-0
Okay, when you run lmtools.exe and click on "configure using services" and then "configure
services" tab there is a combo box labeled "Service Name". Is there more than 1 item to
select from in the "Service Name" combo box????

???

Just the default one - 'FLEXlm Service 1'.

Jason,

I think I have the problem resolved.
I manually created 'c:\flexlm' directory and granted it
proper permissions and the server appears started successfully now.
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it!
