Backburner license

Hi We have one floating license of Maya Premium that i can run on any computer i want on my network. I would like to know if i can render on the network using several computers using mental ray for maya. Do i need a license of maya on each computer just for rendering? Do i have to use backburner for that or i can use whatever dispatcher i want? How does this unlimited render licenses feature work? Thank you Adrian Cruceru

i don't anything about maya i assume its the same as max

with max & backburner you don't need any licenses you do however have to install maya on each machine & run as a trial

i don't know what you mean by any dispatcher you want

let me clarify this a bit: when you use a dispatcher, which launches jobs on machines and keeps track of the jobs as backburner does, you usually check out a license on your license server. i know max has the unlimited rendering option with backburner, my question is: - can i render on as many machines as i want without having a license to run maya interactively? thank you

Hi Adrian,

I have yet to hear of an "unlimited render license feature", I don't think such a  thing exists. It sounds like you have a Network License for Maya. I just answered a very similar question on another post so here is what I told them:

For setting up a render farm running Maya/Mental Ray you have to get a Network License. Contact your Autodesk reseller and they will get one for you. The standard Network License includes one seat of Maya, five seats of Turtle, and five seats of Mental Ray. You will need to install Maya onto all of the computers that will be rendering as well as the workstation. Whenever you try to launch Maya on one of them they will refer to the Network License Manager(NLM), which is free to download and needs to be installed on one of the computers on your network. Preferably the server that runs Backburner Manager. Once it checks the NLM, as long as it sees there are no other computers running that seat it will open. The same goes for the Mental Ray or Turtle seats. When the render nodes are rendering, the only thing that has to be open is Backburner Server. It will be running the Mental Ray or Turtle plugin in the background so you won't see it running.

I suggest refuring to Autodesk's Up and Ready site. http://upandready.typepad.com/

It is written and updated by Autodesk specialists to help people like us figure these things out.

I hope this helps. I spent 8 months building mine and figuring out how it needed to be done as I went, so let me know if you have any other questions.
