You might consider installing the Visual C++ 2005 prerequite separately first by downloading it from Microsoft.

I have had a similar problem which I discussed in another thread (see Installing Maya (ERROR = 1603) Windows 7). Unfortunately I have been attempting to install on a Windows 7 PC for over a month now and have not found a solution yet. The Autodesk support rep has offered some suggestions but none have resolved the issue. I can tell you that in my case, simply installing the prerequisites, upgrading the prerequisites, or un-installing and re-installing the prerequisites did not work. I am extremely frustrated with this problem. Have spent numerous eveings and countless hours trying to resolve. My opinion is this might be a Version 2011 installation bug related to some Windows 7 systems. I had installed Civil 3D 2010 on this same PC without a problem. I have installed many programs on this PC without any difficulties. In my case the installation routine aborts when trying to install Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable (x86) regardless of whether it is already there or not installed. It should not be this difficult to install a program. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Typically the 1603 error has several potential solutions. I am a fan of going straight to the Diagnostic Startup mode as it covers several causes with one stone:
1. Microsoft Installer documentation lists that the 1603 indicates a resource needed by the installer is in use by another process. Often a reboot will stop this. Quitting background applications during the installation of an application is a best practice.
2. Bad media, dirty lens, bad optical drive or bad optical drive drivers can all cause this. If you downloaded the 2010 or 2011 product and it extracted to the C:\Autodesk (or your designated) folder. This should not be the case. You can restart the installer from the Setup.exe without need to re-extract the installer from the download. If you are trying to install from the DVD copy the contents to a temp folder on the local hard drive. If there are several disks start with the first disk then copy additional disks, in order, into the same location and overwrite any files if asked.
3. Permissions are sometimes associated with this error. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 try disabling UAC. Make sure you are a Local Administrator. Sometimes a Domain Admin needs to be added to the local Administrators group. Right-clicking the setup.exe and choosing to Run as Administrator may be necessary as well.

I have disabled UAC and run as an administrator and I still get the 1603 error. I installed Visual C++ 2008 redist SP1 from MS and that works fine. However the ACAD install does not see that this is installed and still tries to install its version of the redist and it fails with 1603.

I solved this issue. If you have Arc GIS 9.3.1 installed on a windows 7 Machine it can reach the registry size limit. ACAD 2011 will not be able to install passed Visual C++ redist. Set your registry size limit to infinite and reboot.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro
Key: RegistrySizeLimit
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0xffffff (4294967295)
Hope this helps.

I had placed a copy of the install dvd on my HD and ran setup from HD. This gave me a 1603 error and i could not install 2011 on my windows 7 pro OS. I retried by installing directly from dvd in stead of HD copy and this worked like a charm.

Not to redig up this thread, but I am also having this problem, except with Maya 2011.
I've tried ALL of the suggestions above and nothing worked.
Am I doomed to never use Maya on this computer forever??? =(

Beautiful! I had the same issue and had ArcGIS 9.3.1 on my computer, altering the registry worked for me too. Thanks for posting, it really helped.
