ABS 2006: features crippled, ACad can't find some of its files?

Dear subscribers

I'm currently managing the computer network on a small school and
unfortunately we have some annoying problem with AutoCad. We have used
AutoCad since version 2004 but for some strange reason there have been
problems with version 2005 and 2006, the latter is what we currently run.

The problems are of the kind that features are missing from the normal set
when starting AutoCad. What happens is that AutoCad complains that it can't
find some needed files during start-up, and in some cases AutoCad complains
first when the user tries to use a certain feature e.g. "Hatch".

When a user tries to start AutoCad 2006 the user might be asked to select
the shape file "ltypeshp.shx". Sometimes at start AutoCad complains that it
can't read some file from "C:\windows\temp" but here it's just to click
"Retry" to continue.

The files

- ltypeshp.shx
- acadiso.pat

are both files that ACad might complain of not finding. The strange thing is
that it's not every user that has those problems, it seems like it's just a
few and in some cases it might help to switch computer. All users have the
same privileges, are members of the same group etc. In some cases, e.g. with
"acadiso.pat" the file is obviously on the disk but ACad still complains
that it can't find it. Acadiso.pat is located in "C:\program files\Autodesk
Building Systems 2006\UserDataCache\".

One thing that might be the source of the problem is that the users don't
have administrative privileges on the computers. For obvious reasons it's
not feasible that every student in the school have administrative
privileges.

The ABS 2006 is distributed to the computers using a computer assigned Group
Policy (GPO) in Windows 2003. The computers are running Windows XP Pro. The
network installation image was prepared using the "Network Installation
Wizard" (NIW) and the resulting image was distributed using the above GPO.
We have tried both the "standard" installation in NIW, where we pretty much
went for all the default values, only providing necessary information and we
have tried a more customized version where we put all the files on a common
server file share. The problems are pretty much the same in both these
cases.

Any help or hints on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards, Ola Theander

This seems like your problems cases didn't have write rights to their
Documents and Settings\\Application Data\ -directories when
first starting ABS.

The program copies all kind of personal settings there, like .cui files
and ltypeshp.shx, but doesn't check this on further starts.

That UserDataCache is more the place to get a clean copy when they
clobber their original versions of .cui files etc.
