3ds max installation problem

I have big problem installing 3ds max.i am running Win7.

Attempt 1: choose 'save' option and downloaded 2 files. ran installer from desktop and entered serial number and product key. install started which seemed to go well for a few minutes and then took almost 30 minutes to move past first module (C++). Finally, downloaded several other modules and then i got error box saying 'monitor.exe'. a search showed that file is not on my machine. dismissed error and nothing lese happened.

Attempt 2: wanted a clean re-install so i uninstalled 2 C++ files and the install program (forget name but started with A...). no other files showed as uninstallable. when click on install this time box popped up so fast could not read it. went back online and tried 'run' option this time. got 'download complete', 'open autodesk 3ds max 2011 file 1 (2 of 2), 'downloading autodesk 3ds max 2011 file 1 (2 of 2)', and then 'calculating time remaining' where it hung for a half hour''

question is what next? should i remove all installed 3ds software and start over? if so, how? another approach?

please help...

There are two components to this: 1) the download files and 2) the installer. I’ll assume you had successful download and extraction of the files required for Max. You can review this post if you wish to address a possible download or extraction issue or to understand the composition of the download.

Assuming the download and extraction were successful I’d recommend that you do this:

  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. Type %temp% in the address bar, then press Enter.
  3. Delete any files and folders that are a few days older than the last time you rebooted the computer.
  4. Reboot into Diagnostic Mode.
  5. Browse to “C:\Autodesk\ Autodesk_3ds_Max_2011_English_Win_32-64bit” and double click setup.exe to re-start the Installer.
  6. If it fails take screen shots and go to the Windows Explorer and gather up any new .log files to this thread. Then reboot and post them to this thread.
  7. If Successful Reboot without Diagnostic Mode.

Let us know how things work out.

Douglas,

Thanks for your informative reply. I followed your suggestions but ran into a problem.

Installed:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x86)  => O.K.

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable (x86)  =>  O.K.

DirectX Runtime Update  => O.K.

Autodesk Backburner 2008.1  => PROBLEM! => "The installer has detected that the following programs are running. monitor.exe. In order to complete installation these programs must be closed."

Using the WIN7 search I can find NO program named monitor.exe.

This is where things went wrong when I initiially tried to install 3ds Max. Your suggestions have worked very well to get me back to where things went wrong (thanks, I was wondering if that was possible) but now I need the next step.

The monitor.exe program is flagged with the error code but mayve it's another program that's actually causing the problem. If I knew what program to stop I would stop it and get on with the installation.

At this point I definitely need your help again.

Thanks,

Mitch Moody

Hi Mitch,

Thank you for the additional information. Did you get this error when you were booted in Diagnostic Mode? This mode usually prevents additional processes from running.

I Googled “monitor.exe” and found many explanations that described it as a file for the Windows Server Operating System, LeapFrog Software, and even viruses. One source listed 64 sources for an executable with this name. I might download a new virus signature and perform a complete scan to be safe.

I have also researched cases our product support team has had on this and many recommendations are to stop this process from the task manager.

You can do this by:

   1. Pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC on the keyboard.

   2. Then select the Processes tab

   3. Right click monitor.exe, then choose End Process.

   4. Once stopped the Installer should run.

Let us know the results.

Douglas,

You nailed my problem. Thanks so much.

I'll continue to say "nobody at any tech support line has helped me for 15 years." I'll just have to add "Except, of course, for Douglas at Autodesk."

Thanks again,

Mitch

Running Windows 7 x64 the installation seemed to go fine.  When I try to run 3Ds Max Design I first got an error saying 'Missing d3dx9_43.dll file" it was in sysWOW64 dir. but missing in system32 so I added it.  Now I get an application error "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application."

What do I need to do to fix.

Mijn oprechte dank.

I'm having the same issue with a brand new powerful computer- and I know the installation media is good, I used it before. Need a solution!

if anyone is still having problems with d3dx9_43.dll, try installing/reinstalling directx 9.  Replaced the .dll in system32 and in my max folder and works perfectly

Even easier - download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from the Microsoft Website http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

After I installed it the d3dx9_43.dll not found message disappeared and I could run 3ds.

Well Mr. Ramdass, as you must know Windows 8 Pro has a more recent version that this one, so, this couldnt solve the problem.

I assume Autodesk tested all version first of letting them see the light, this is causing a lot of problem a loose of time.

I cannot install 3DS max because it is saying monitor.exe needs to be closed to complete the installation. What do I do?

Dear Sir/Madam

I have currently been introduced to 3ds max in college and I'm struggling though the Installation part. I have it downloaded onto my laptop but the set up im having problems with it is saying

CRC failed in x86/max/max1/.cab

Unexpected end of archive

I don't have a absolute clue what this means and I'd just like to get it all installed and catch up in my class. If anyone has any insight on this anything will be appreciated.

I've downloaded Autodesk 3ds Max 2012 32 bit

Thank You
