3DS Max 2010 won't open

I am on WindowsXP 32bit machine. 3DS Max 2010 stand-alone. Graphics card is ATI Radeon 2400 HD Pro with Catalyst version 11.6

recently my 3DS Max 2010 started having an issue...it will not open. When I open it I see the Splash screen and it stay on "initializing 3ds max"...

In the processes I see 3DS Max and LMU.exe (license mange utility?)...I have to close both to try again and still nothing. Previously 3DS Max worked fine on my machine.There are no logs in the adlm folder. No event errors in event viewer...nothing...it is like a completly silent FAIL!

Things I have tried:

- disabled symantec endpoint protection

- deleted autodesk files from Flexnet 'all users' folder

- installed all availble updates for 2010

- deleted 3ds max preference ini file

- clean removal and reinstall of 3DS max

- removal and reinstall of .net 3.5 sp1 framework

None of the above has solved the issue. This is my work machine and certain things such as security updates and firewall are out of my control...however I was able to run 3DS max previously. My IT department claims nothing new that would affect it has been added...any help would be appreciated.

Hi Daniel:

Can you try renaming your plugcfg folders--one is in the install directory and one is in your user directory.  See if that allows you to launch the product.

Also, you may want to uninstall 3ds Max, then turn off all Antivirus/Malware/Spyware and re-download a fresh installation package from Autodesk's website.

I am blocked from renaming files in the program files folder unfortunantly. I was unable to find the plugcfg folder in the user directory...looked in application data in both my directory and the all users directory...

I could not find the version of 2010 to download from Autodesk site, just 2012. I reinstalled max from my disk again with Symantec completly off...no luck.

Can you check the permissions on this key in the registry using AccessEnum?

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces

You can find AcessEnum here:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897332

Hello Daniel:

You need write permssions to that location in the registry.  Could you request that your IT person correct the permisions on that location?

Hi Danel:

At this point, I would suggest that if you are a subscriber, you log a case at this point.  If you are not a subscriber, you can open a pay-per-incident case to see if this can be worked on in real-time with a technician over a desktop sharing session.

I'm sorry I couldn't do more, but you've got a pretty complicated issue there that would be best looked at by a technician in real time.  If I think of anything else, I'll let you know Daniel.

Could this be a licensing issue? I have had to reinstall 3DS Max on this machine after I had a hardware issue and my harddrive was reimaged....I also have a copy installed on my home machine to work from home.

here are a few things I noticed as odd to add:

When I try to open the License Transfer Utility...it does not open...it shows in the processes, but never opens.

Looking at the log files I found a few things:

The adlmLTU.log file contains:

Reason=Fatal error

ComputerName=

os=5.1.2600.service pack 3

File=main.cpp, line=70

LTUError=3 [missing command line argument]

I then looked in the FlexNet folder at the log there...Here is what that has:

Exception: 64, Module: 100000, Location: 1, Internal: 2147942487

EventCode: 30000011

Exception: 64, Module: 100000, Location: 1, Internal: 2147942487

EventCode: 10000002

When I open max it also opens LMU.exe. The LMU.exe process eats up about half the CPU...however nothing happens...MAX never goes past "Initializining" and I never get a splash screen to re-activate. If I kill just the  3DS Max process and try to reopen the 3ds max splash crashes. If I kill both the LMU.exe and 3DSmax process and reopen...same issue above.

Hi Daneil:

Do you have a log in this location?  If so, can you post it?

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Adlm

No, but there is a log in this location:

documents and setting/all users/application data/autodesk/adlm/r1

I attached it...

Hi Daniel:

Try moving the ADLM folder completely out of that path and re-launching.

OK Daniel:

Restore the folder to it's original location and see if this article helps:

I tried that previously. I just tried again and issue continues...

Out of desperation I again uninstalled Max. I also uninstalled Visual Studio and .Net framework completly. I removed all autodesk and 3Ds Max references and folders form thew machin and registry. I then made sure I had full previledges/permissions in registry and hard-drive. I also disabled Symantec Endpoint Protection. Then I reinstalled 3DS max....and still the issue resumes...

No errors, no screen asking for activation...just the splash screen on "initializing 3Ds Max" and a CPU heavy process LMU.exe that opens with max. Also the LTU.EXE (license transfer utility) still will not open either...something is very odd.

Okay, not sure why this worked. Basically I gave up. I started having an issue with my Outlook 2010...I found a fix...and that fix also fixed the 3DS Max issue...Here is what i did:

Go to start, then run.  Type dcomcnfg and push o.k. Component Services should come up.

Expand Component Services, click on Computers, then "Right click" on My Computer and go to "properties".

Click on Default Properties tab, and make sure the following is set:

Default Authentication Level: Should say Connect, not "None"

And Default Impersonation Level: Should say Identify.

When those are set properly, hit o.k

then...

Open a CMD.EXE window.

Type msdtc -resetlog and press Enter, making sure that you DO NOT have any pending pending transactions before you run the command.

Type net start msdtc and press Enter.

Then 3DS Max works...Outlook too 😜

Can anyone shed any light on what the issue was? And why this solved it?
