17.1.8 licence manager error

Standalone ACAD2002 I have the 17.1.8 license manager unexpected error.
I've applied all the patches etc. discussed within this forum and elsewhere. The virus scanner was also patched and then finally removed from the system.
The platform is W2000 SP2 runing on a Dell Latitude LS- two separate boot partitions both W2000. The error was observed in both partitions (one of the install partitions was a completely 'clean' build of w2000.)
If I install a network version of ACAD2002 on the platform, then this works OK, so its the locally installed license manager that is the problem. I have tried completely uninstalling the product, files, all registry entries etc., etc. but I still have the problem.
I note that others have fixed this issue with a disk re-format, I dont have this option for this particular system.
Any ideas?

If you're trying to use AutoCAD 2002 in two different
partitions on the same PC (with the standalone license), then at least one
partition must be shared between both boot configurations.  The easiest way
is to assign C: to be the same partition in both, but if that's not possible, it
can be any partition on a local, nonremovable hard disk.

Install AutoCAD
on one partition, and get it running smoothly (authorize if necessary).
Then, exit AutoCAD and move the folder C:\C_DILLA to the root of the desired
shared partition (i.e. D:\C_DILLA, E:\C_DILLA, etc.), and remove it from
C.  On launch, each local partition will be scanned for these license
files.  Make sure each user login has read/write access to this
folder.

The issue seems to be more basic than this.
ACAD2002 standalone will not run on this system on any partition whatever I try. (Initially ACAD2002 was installed on partition D:\ although I note C_DILLA installs/defaults to C:\). The network version of ACAD2002 is however OK if installed on this system. The above noted virus scanner patches have already been applied with no result. I note also that if the portable license manager facility is started- it says there is an "error trying to retrieve this machines Identification code." Ideas?

That's a great symptom, thanks.  It indicates that write
access to the hard disk is being denied.  Some questions:

1. Does it work if you login to the local PC as an
administrator?  If so, then make sure that every user has read/write access
to C:\C_DILLA.

2. Does it work if you temporarily turn off your antivirus
program, or eliminate C:\C_DILLA from its scan?

3. Did it ever work on this PC?  If so, what's changed
since then?

4. What boot manager do you use, and in fact, what is all the
software that loads before the OS?

I have now removed anything from this system that may be the source for this problem, and halted almost all services, etc. I've also edited the registry etc.

The summary is ACAD200o is OK, ACAD2002 network is OK, ACAD 2002 standalone (the one required) has never worked on this system. Im logged is as full administrator. The issue is C_DILLA cannot see the machine identifier and therefore fails.

The error log "AutoCAD 2002 Adlm.err" includes the following fragment..
--->
[916: 2003/4/29 - 22:58:27:128]
ThrownFile=..\adlmcd\CdaSelectTryAndExtendHandler.cpp
ThrownLine=218
AdlmError=17
AdlmVersion=1.0.0
OSMajorVersion=5
OSMinorVersion=0
OSBuildNo=2195
OSPlatform=2
OSExtraInfo=Service Pack 2
<--------

My only and final thought is that the W2000 machine name is of the format A-NAAANNA-AAAA (where N is numeric, A alpha) - I wonder if C_DILLA has an issue with a system name of this format ?? Other machine names where this is works are all shorter without hyphens etc.

It would help if you could be more specific.  The few
more details you've given are helpful, but for example, what have you removed
that might be a source for this problem?  What did you edit in the
registry, and why?  This does not fill me with confidence.

You left a few of my previous questions unanswered [I've
indicated the answers you've given]:

1. Does it work if you login to the local PC as an
administrator?  [No.] If so, then make sure that every user has read/write
access to C:\C_DILLA. [What sharing permissions are on this folder? Right click
and select Properties.]

2. Does it work if you temporarily turn off your antivirus
program, or eliminate C:\C_DILLA from its scan? [No.]

3. Did it ever work on this PC?  [No, not standalone.] If
so, what's changed since then? [N/A]

4. What boot manager do you use, and in fact, what is all the
software that loads before the OS?

Let me add a few more comments and questions
below.

This is good stuff, thanks!  What is the value
for "VendorError" in this file?  Is there any other value besides
"VendorError=8"?

No, that's not it.  When the PLU gives the error
message "Can't get Machine ID Code", it means that the boot disk is returning a
non-standard value, for example, if it's not a local, non-removable hard disk (a
disk with removable media, like a floppy or Zip, would fail), or that some other
software is denying full read/write access.  Such software is likely to be
what I asked about in question 4 above.  Usually this is antivirus stuff,
but what else have you got?

The W2000 machine name is not an issue, however you're
exactly on the right track by trying to compare this configuration to others
that work.
