Ubuntu 11.04: libGL crashes

Thought I'd break out the old Maya again. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 which is now using Unity. I'm on a laptop which has an Intel Mobile Express GM45 card in it. I used to have Maya running in both OpenSUSE and Crunchbang, so I know it's possible without crashes. I've installed all required libraries (that I can think of).

However, these are the crashes I'm experiencing.

Maximizing / Unmaximizing window. It starts maxed, but if I unmax and then max, crash.
Pressing spacebar to go to the four panel view. I can hold it and use the hotbox just fine, but using it quickly to change views will kill Maya.

Those are when I'm using Unity / Compiz. If I change to Metacity, or log into Unity 2D, or Gnome with effects disabled, Maya crashes upon startup. Only a few icons load on the Maya toolbars before it crashes. That's the weird part. Maya seems to only run half-functionally if window effects are activated (like shadows, compositing, workspaces). If I run a disabled sort of login without any effects, Maya won't even start.

All crashes yield the same type of crash though. Window is frozen, terminal output:
Signal: 11 (Unknown Signal)

Using "maya -d gdb / r / bt" gives me a similar stack trace for each crash:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

So, my mesa version of libGL is causing Maya to crash. Any suggestions?
