How to clean up intersections in a shapefile

How to clean up these intersections generated by shapefile + road style.  I don't want to redraw everything with design roads either.  to what extent and how can design roads and shapfile roads mix with each other?  can rule-based intersections be generated?

Just saw this older post. Guess you found out already: Meanwhile you can convert 'SHP FIle Roads' (Standard Roads) into design roads (selct road, right click)
