Yes it does seem that there are issues with the display of vertical and near vertical pipes. You can use pipe connectors for the vertical sections and set the hieght to the required value in the Geometry section of the Pipe Connector Properties.
Well, it's 2019 and I bring this up since I'm having the same issue and 5 years weren't apparently enough for Autodesk to fix this problem... Any new workaround/ fix for this?
