Installation and Remote Server

I have a Dell Precision 370, Windows XP SP2, Pentium 3.4 with 1GB Ram. I am
running Remote Desktop, and I am aware that the readme said that
Impressions might not run under these conditions. I am also running Civil
3D, Land Desktop 2005. Is there any workaround or fix for those using Remote
Desktop?

Because Impression requires use of DirectX which is not supported by Remote Desktop, this solution won't work.

An alternative that we use internally is called VNC: http://www.realvnc.com/

Admitedly, I don't know the subleties of DirectX. There are a lot of
programs that use it. Is it that having Remote Desktop on the computer that
is the issue OR trying to use Impressions with Remote Desktop or VirtualPC.
On the computer using Remote Desktop, Impressions refused to install. It
apparently stopped while trying to install a DirectX runtime.

Hi Bob:

The basic issue is the when you are connected to a computer with Remote Desktop, you cannot run (on the remote computer) a program that requires DirectX. This is a limitation we get from Microsoft.

For Impression this means that you can't run it via Remote Desktop _and_ you can't install it via Remote Desktop. During the install, we run DirectX to check that your system meets our requirements. The test will fail because DirectX can't start and so the install will fail.

To successfully install and run Impression, you either need to be in front of the machine and not connected via Remote Desktop, or use the VNC product that I mentioned.

Let us know how it goes...

Rod,

Thanks for the quick reply. My situation is that I am attempting to install
Impressions on the client computer, (the one I am sitting at), and not using
Remote Desktop at the same time. What is happening is that the install
stops with an installer information screen and the aborts. This occurs at a
time when the installer is apparently trying to install the DirectX runtime
library. I ran the system test tool and it gave me an OK for Impressions. I
have attached (I think) the screenshot of the Windows installer window that
occurs.

I also installed it on my home computer where it has installed fine.

Thanks,

Rod,

In addition to the log files that I sent to you on 11/22 I tried to fool the
problem by running the Impression install that is in the temp installation
folder. While Impression installed without issuing and error, when I tried
to start the program it proceeds about half way and then aborts with the
attached message. I am guessing that one of the Windows dll files must be
different than what is being used by Adesk.
