Strand Instance Deform

New to strands and I can't seem to get strand instances to deform. I've tried all different types of arrangements but can't seem to crack it. I found a reference that showed the following type of ICE tree as the correct type of tree but I can't get it to work ( yes I've got the loft strand shape box checked).

Can anyone confirm whether or not this is the correct approach?
