Lost 15 hrs work going back online.

I'm working on a car model and was working online, and had trouble saving so I worked offline for the next 15 hours. When I went back online I got a strange message saying that someone else had modified the file and there was a version that was automaticaly saved, which I opened and got a message saying this will become the latest version. Thinking that the file I was working on got uploaded. I disconnected from the net, this caused my current work on my computer to get erased and overwriten by a file that was saved 15 hours earlier.

Now I could have lost a weeks worth of work just as easily.

So why doesn't offline mode allow you to save more than one copy? The only software I've ever used that would allow you to save one copy. How do you create a new version while working offline? How do you protect your work? If you want to go back to an earlier version while offline, how do you do that?

I haven't used offline mode much, and I assumed that some sort of Save Copy option or the Export Archive command would appear there- but just trying this I don't see any obvious way to back up a copy of your work if you are offline. Or any information on where your work is cached so you could back up through the OS.

It doesn't make sense to be able to save a local copy if you are connected, but to not allow this if you are offline.  Searching the Help resources didn't yield any answers either.  Are we missing something?

Hello,

I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.

The offline mode will place the latest version of the design that you've been working in a local queue. When you reconnect, the last saved version will be uploaded. The offline mode may need some improvements in the area of data management. I like your idea about allowing multiple versions to be saved concurrently while in offline mode. If you would like, I can add this idea to the IdeaStation for you.

With that said, I don't believe that you should lose versions that were created while you were offline. I ran a small test:

1. Opened a Design on Machine 1, disabled network connections and went offline

2. Edited the design while offline and made a version

3. Opened the same design on Machine 2

4. Edited the design, saved, made a version note, and then closed the design

5. On Machine 1 I reconnected to the network and the version from my offline uploaded without any problems.

Result: When I check my version history, I see both the version saved while on Machine 2 and the version saved while in Machine 1.

Potential Problem: I performed this test using only my user account.

In your case it seems that another version was created when you were in the offline mode. Can you confirm if a version was made by another user while you were offline?

There are no edit privileges/Data Management features in Fusion 360. For example, you cannot "Check out" a design so that another user is not allowed to make edits to it. So there is no way to "Lock" a design down. This may be another good enhancement for the IdeaStation. Currently when reconnecting from offline mode,  I would expect the "last save wins" behavior to exist. Which means, if you came online after an edit was made, the version created offline would become the latest version.

Perhaps the trick to reproducing this issue is to have someone make new versions while another user is coming online. I have some research to do, but I will find out what I can and get back to you. In the meantime, any further guidance you can offer would be really helpful.

Thanks again for reporting this issue.

Kind Regards,

Thanks,

Before I started working offline I was having frequent crashes, so the program had saved a version when it crashed. I went offline and continued to work on my local version for 15 hrs. when I went back online I got the message that another user did something. I'm the only one using my files. At the same time a message pop out says there's a recovered file, I clicked that thinking my version was uploaded automaticaly. Well the file opened and a message said this will become the current version. I went offline not wanting it to be the current version but then realized that it overwritten my local copy which was not uploaded. This was all pretty fast so maybe the file would have uploaded given more time. I had that message at least 2 times before that.... that another user did something to the file. Maybe because it saved a crashed copy and I went offline that it thinks its by another user?

.....Even a message to the effect of: 'Do you really want to overwrite your saved version with this older one?' would have saved me from losing it.

Please add the suggestion for more local versions, thanks.
