Constraint and dimensioning issues for 3-d parts

When trying to create 3-d models in fusion 360, it won't allow me to apply dimension lines to the 3-d objects. I'm instead warned of how the sketch geometry is overconstrained. If I leave it as just a 2 dimension sketch, it will leave the dimensional lines just fine. Is there a way to show the dimension lines on the 3-d object, or to turn off the constraints?

I've attached a simple project just to see if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong (or what I could do right) to correct this issue.

At this time it appears that sketch dimensions are restricted to 2D sketches. You should add this as an Idea in the Fusion 360 IdeaStation.

If you could use the export archive feature from the main application menu in the workspace, and then upload the resulting F3D file it may help with taking a look at your file. The archive file will preserve all of the native Fusion 360 data!

Are you asking how to show sketch dimensions when the sketch is not active?

I used fusion 360 a couple months ago and I thought we were able to show our dimension lines on our 3-D parts, but I don't know what may have been different about then versus now. I've uploaded the f3d file. The main question really is if there is a way for me to show dimension lines on 3-D parts so that I don't have to keep clicking "inspect" to find out a length of something.

I'm trying to find out how (or if I'm even able) to make dimension lines for a 3-d image and have them stay there without giving me an error in regards to constraint issues. Every time I have a dimension line on the 3-d body, it tells me how I have the constraint issue. So either bypassing that or getting it to work correctly, either would work well for my needs.

I very much want to help but I don't understand your question. Can you markup a screenshot or provide a picture of what you are trying to do?

My guess is that you wan to show a 3D body with dimensions displayed, with the dimensions showing in the 3D view- correct? It's something I miss from using Ashlar Cobalt.  Fusion is not, at this point, really able to do that.

You can dimension sketches, but dimensions in sketching are tied to generating constraints, not to documenting the drawing.  So it is easy to get to the point of a sketch being "over constrained". You may be able to put in some dimensions, but you may not be able to create in a fully dimensioned drawing without getting that error.

There was a beta of the Windows Fusion Documentation, which was geared towards generating dimensioned drawings- but I think that may not be what you are after, either.

Hi Jascully,

Currently we can create many kinds of dimensions in active sketch and to avoid mess dimenisons in all sketches show together, we only show dimensions in active sketch.

Do you want to have the ability to dimension directly on 3D edges? If so, you can add comments here.

Hello Shirley,

Yes, I was wanting to be able to have the dimensional annotations on the 3D surfaces, partly for when I have to sketch this back over onto a lab notebook, and partly so that when I'm explaining it to people like professors, that the scale of the item is easier for them to understand. A 3D model with dimensions is often far easier for people to understand than the 2D sketch with dimensions on 3 faces. But I did submit a reply on the forum page you mentioned, thank you for your help.

The over constrained warning was definitely getting annoying, specially since it doesn't tell you why, or how to fix it. But you are correct about wanting the dimensions shown in the 3d view. Shirley answered my question though. But thank you for your reply as well .

Hi Jascully,

I saw your comments on the forum. Thanks for your input. I think it will raise our priority to support 3DA in the future.

Thanks again for your comments!
