memory/motherboard reality check please

well the birthday fairy and santa have joined forces this year, and swiped
the list of computer parts i was looking to get around to buying for myself.
some of the fairys and elves had already done their shopping when momma
santa hit a snag, the motherboard that i had selected isn't available.
oops, guess i procrastinated quite awhile since i originally selected it
. so now i have to find another motherboard that is compatible with
stuff that may or may not have already been bought. aaauuugggghhhhh! i
figure the antec case w/ 400W power supply, GeForce4 Ti4200, and plextor
cdrw should be absolutely fine no matter what the fairys and elves may have
already bought.

the big question is will the ASUS A7N8X
http://www.googlegear.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=240273

and the possibly purchased Athlon 2100
http://www.googlegear.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80163-R

play nice with the possibly purchased Corsair CMX512-2700C2
http://www.googlegear.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80060

i *think* the answer is yes, can someone with a little more experience in
this sort of thing give me a definite answer?

Yes. You'll get slightly better performance by using 2 sticks of RAM
in dual-channel rather than a single stick. You can also get better
performance by running in Synchronous 266 mode rather than Async 333
mode.

My Asus A7N8X Deluxe and Athlon 2000 should be here tomorrow.
I went ahead and got an Asus V9180 Video Card.

I found a decent deal on PC3200 400mhz CL2/CAS 2 DDR memory ($149) at:
http://www.ocsystem.com (just delivered by UPS!)

Hey Matt! I screwed up and got a V9180 TD instead of a V9180 VS.
I'm thinking about exchanging it for the VS. Whatcha think?

thanks Matt. can you elaborate a little bit on the running in Synchronous
266 mode rather than Async 333 mode. i've got a glimmer of an idea about
what you are talking about, but how do i do it?

Umm.. I dunno. I read it on the web 🙂

I'm pretty sure it's a BIOS setting. Because DDR333 (PC2700) RAM can
run in both modes (either at 333MHz or 266MHz) you should have the
option to run either synchronously or asynchronously.

One of my recent posts discusses this very topic.

The default on most motherboards is to automatically set the memory clock to
be synchronous with the FSB. You can put in PC3500 RAM if you really want
to, but it will run at 266 mhz by default if you have an Athlon 2100+. The
rating (PC3500, 2700, whatever) is just the speed that memory manufacturer
says the module is capable of running at, not the speed which is chosen by
default.

Quite right - I had completly ignored the speed rating on the
processor. I think if you get a 2400+ or better you gain the ability
to run RAM asynchronously, but thet really doesn't get you anywhere.
