That dang laptop keyboard!

Can I pick everyones brain? I had a post about a Dell laptop a little while
ago titled "disfunctional keys" on 11-16. I synopse, I have a laptop in the
firm where the "I" and "K" keys were acting up. We kind of ruled out
software issues, or known viruses, so I ordered a new keyboard and put it
in. Now, the exact same thing is happening. Short of putting this on a
skeet pulley and having some fun with it, does anyone have any other advice?
Is this even worth messing with? The laptop is about 3-4 years old. Still
decent and functional, but recently acting up. Thanks for any and all
advice.

I was always partial to skeet shooting. Please post pics of the results.

Maybe I'll take the old HP2P that is making horrible grinding noises
(despite two trips to the shop) out the same day.

When you say 'acting up' what are they doing?

They are randomly not working. You will be typing away, and all of the I's
and K's will be gone. Then it will start mysteriosly start working again.
The first go around, if I held the keys down real hard, they would start
working again, which why I replaced the keyboard. Now that it is acting up
again, I think I was wrong. I'll just get a new one, and play with this one
at my leisure. Maybe I can track down the bug, there are some other misc.
things acting funny. Thing is ancient, you know, over two years in computer
time is like 200 in normal people years. Like dogs, only worse.

Sounds like you did the right thing by replacing the keyboard. It is a
possibility, though a remote one, that both keyboards suffer from a factory
defect! If so, you shouldn't be the only one with this problem.

Sounds like a loose connection somewhere. Did you replace the connector
cable too? That could fix it unless the problem is on the motherboard side.

The connector cable is hardwired to the keyboard, so I am leaning to your
motherboard theory, or possibly the fatherboard.

Sorry, bad joke, I just heard that commercial.

It's also possible that you may have a faulty keyboard controller in the
laptop.

Yes, that does seem to be most likely. Unfourtunately that controller is
embedded in the board. If i am not mistaken, you would have to replace the
whole mobo to fix the problem. Not likely now, considering the age of the
laptop.
