Ed,

I'm getting costs for laptops to replace workstations for a client.
They will use port replicators (docking stations) so they can slip in
the laptop at the office and be connected to a large monitor, mouse,
keyboard, network, etc.

Check out www.dell.com. They have three laptop choices, Inspiron...
home and small office, Latitude... general office, and Precision M50
higher cost for 3d cad. I recommend their fastest 2.2 ghz and 15"
Ultrasharp UXGA monitor.

AutoCAD and Adt use open gl for 3d graphics performance and the
Precision M50 Quadro is the best of the three, and you will pay more
for it.

I have a recommendation - I just bought a Dell Latitude C840 with the Ultra
Sharp UXGA 15" screen, P42.2, 512MB RAM, 64MB nVidia GF4 video, 20GB Hard
drive, XP Pro, Office XP Small Business, Mini PCI Wireless card, CDRW/DVD
combo drive, and extra battery - about $2400 delivered (after $150 instant
rebate from Dell). I bought it refurbished from DELLOUTLET.COM. I did the
math and figured I saved about $700 doing that way. And the base warranty
is better with the refurbs. It was a little like buying from Ebay - if you
see one you like, buy it. Otherwise it's gone. Over the couse of about 10
days, I tried to buy 5 different systems. I would have preferred a faster,
bigger hard drive but that didn't come available when I was buying.

I did a ton of research and most of it on forums, news groups, and opinion
polls. Specs are specs, but I wanted to know about reliability, durability
and customer satisfaction. Dell came out the winner over Gateway.

I used AutoCAD primarily, but also do some ADT 3.3 and solid modeling. This
laptop does just fine. If I open the Sample Home that comes with ADT 3.3
and orbit the shaded model it can be a little chunky. But other than that
it works like a charm. I also do powerpoint presentations and watch movies
on it without a hiccup.

I did learn one thing about the Latitude vs the Inspiron. The Latitude C
series is designed so that any C Series on the market now or that comes out
in the future is designed to use the same docking station, power cord,
modular bays, etc. Meaning that you can upgrade the system without throwing
out all the extras you bought with the last one.

I am an architectural student and will buy a laptop very soon. I will need the laptop to replace my outdated home PC and be mobile enough to take to school everyday. I will be running Autocad 2004 and will be 3-d rendering/modeling. Any suggestions would be appreicated. What do you think of the Toahiba M30? I have had this recommended.

Try the new Precision M60 mobile workstation by dell with the new Pentium M Dothan processor.
AT LEAST 1Gig RAM especially if you are going to be using separate rendering programs such as 3d Max.
NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics card!!!

It is kinda pricey though, close to 4 bills.

Hey Everybody,

Im a new drafter and I am looking to purchase a new laptop for my Acad. I would like to know what is the best Graphics/video card for it? There are a lot of choices out there and I'm a little overwhelmed! HELP! I have read that so far dell is prefered, but what do i need to look for that is the most important?
I do onsite drawings and and remote transmit. Structural and architectual drafting, mostly for commercial and residental construction. I am also often linked by intranet with a drafting forum.
I really appreciate all help. Thanks
