LCD monitors

Anyone use LCD monitors and like them? I bought a 19" Dell Ultrasharp
1900FP (Samsung 191F) with a new workstation based upon positive reviews
from several PC/CAD publications. Even with the cleartype optimized through
Microsoft's website, text looks a little poor. Although colors and IV
textures look great, the edge details looks harsh.

I switched it out with my trusted Sony 21" flat screen CRT, and I'm not
going back (I'll give it to the marketing department to run Illustrator and
InDesign). Granted, I'm running 1600x1200 on the 21", but I would have
thought 1280x1024 would have been adequate on the LCD.

Anthony.

Was it connected via the DVI port? It makes a big difference.

Yes, digital to digital. All drivers updated, XP shows digital connection.

What resolution and refresh rate? LCD need lower refresh rates, I run
mine at 60 Hz. Flicker is not an issue with LCDs, too high a refresh
(70 Hz or higher) will cause image degradation.

I was using 60hz, as recommended. The image wasn't bad, just maybe too
sharp compared to a CRT, so you can see each pixel more defined. Probably
just my preference rather than poor performance.

That could be, I noticed that I had to reduce the brightness much lower
than I normally used on a CRT. I also had to make sure the monitor was
at least an arms length away from me, maybe a little more.

I went from my trusted HP 21" to HP 2025 LCD and I am not going back. I even
saved money for new reading glasses 🙂
The monitor is clear and sharp. I was a little woried about my photography
and the scanning but the colors are crisp and clear.

It is very important to run at the optimal resolution.

If your LCD is built for 1600x1200, then run at that resolution.
If its made for 1280x1024, then 1280x1024 is the relolution you want.

LCD's CAN run at other than optimal resolutions, but with poor results.

Anthony,

I use a 15" Proview LCD at home and a 18" Sony LCD at work, and love em both. As soon as I get som bucks ($$$) I plan to upgrade at home to 17" or 18". (maybe I should stay away from the Samsung though).
>BR>

I would never go back to a conventional CRT.

Your experience is fact. LCD's don't do nearly as good of a job as a CRT.
I've tried to understand why people think they are better but the only
conclusion I can come up with is that they paid so much money for it they
have tricked their minds into thinking that LCD's work better.

Hummmm..... Have you tried both LCD's & CRTs in a sunny morning room crowded
of windows? You'll see the difference! You'll be able to see everything in
the LCDs, and very very little with the CRTs. At least that was my case, and
the difference is huge!

i have an SGI LCD and sony CRT side by side, there is no comparison, the LCD
is an order of magntude sharper, brighter and has more vivid colours. The
bonus is the lack of screen glare and my eyes are much less strained, also
no more radiation or magnetic interference.

I'm sorry but I couldn't resist linking an article that I read recently.

http://www.dansdata.com/gz021.htm

Basically, the article states (rather emphatically) that the reason most
people prefer LCD's is that they have never properly set their CRT's. And
after years of walking to other people's computers and watching their
screens shimmying, I tend to agree. I even changed a co-worker's monitor
from the default 60 htz to 85 htz and he told me he liked it better the way
it was before.

I moved from a 21" CRT to a 20" Dell LCD and it actually took me a few days
to get used to it. Now I like it, but text is not as sharp as with my
previous monitor.

I believe I use the same monitor at work and I have been very happy with it. I was glad to get rid of the glare from the old CRT, but I do miss the larger CRT I used before. As long as you are running the resolution to the native resolution of the screen it should look good. There is a definite difference in the look of a CRT vs LCD but I love the two I am using.

Everyone should check out the ClearType Tuner for LCD's, it is a dramatic difference for reading text on screen.
