Installing SCSI Hard Drives into Server

I am going to try and install two new 18GB SCSI Hard drives into our server
running NT4. Right now there are 4 18GB drives in the server. Is there
anything special I should know before I proceed? I think I understand how
they are supposed to be physically installed. But once the drives are in
and the computer is rebooted what should I expect? Will the drives
automatically be recognized? Should they be formatted? I am planning to
mirror the drives.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

Jerry Freeman

Yes I do. The two new drives are the same as the other four.

Jerry, I haven't done this in quite some time, but, as I recall, your BIOS
should see the disks no problem, on booting, but Windows will ignore them.
You have to go into NT's disk manager and create volumes.

As for mirroring, you can do it two ways - some SCSI cards will do it for
you (hardware mirroring), or NT can do it for you (software mirroring).
I've only ever done hardware mirroring, which you have to setup through your
SCSI cards bios (not the Motherboard BIOS). How, exactly, you do that is a
function of your SCSI card.

Jerry,

If it's a RAID system (and I'm pretty sure it is) you simply add the drives and
upon bootup you go into the SCSI controller's BIOS. This will come up after the
machine's BIOS but before Windows starts. Use the SCSI BIOS to add the new
drives to the RAID array.
