AutoCAD C3D 2010 vs Dell Precision T5400 (Dell is up against the ropes)

    Hello everyone!

Recently, our I.T. dept. installed AutoCAD C3D, AutoCAD Architecture 2010, and Map 3D 2010.
Our Workstations are Dell Precision T5400's which I know Dell retired this model.

    Xenon X5450 (R) @ 3.00GHz
    4GB of Ram @ 667MHz (ECC)
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 4600 768MB

The build was done last year and it ran our AutoCAD 2008 versions really well.

When running 2010 CD3, the application flickers constantly and lags.
This is most noticeable when tool palettes are docked.
You can watch the tool palette bar flicker non-stop.

When working with two AutoCAD applications open and alone, there is a severe lag.
Recently one of the applications would shutdown. Other applications that have to run
at all the times are Zenworks, Mcafee, and Novell Client Trust.

Does anyone have an idea as to what could be the cause and how to solve this issue?

We want to take on Revit MEP 2010 but I don't feel to confident about this
Workstation handling that softare. I will gladly provide as much info as possible
    if needed on our Workstations.

Thank you everyone for your help in this matter.

I have 4 t5400's here at work, running AutoCAD 2009/2010 MEP. We also have
    Revit.
Our are configured with the Xeon E5420, 2.50 GHz processors, but 8GB or RAM,
and the dual nvidia Quadro FX 570, and dual monitors.
We haven't had any flickering problems.
Talk to Dell...sounds liek maybe your card is going bad.
Try a different cable too...sometimes they get a kink or something.

    Couple of ideas:

    1. Make sure all of your Dell supplied drivers, esp the chipset, are up to date.
    2. Make sure the firmware is up to date.
    3. Get the latest Quadro video drivers from nVidia, not Dell.
    4. In the display driver control panel, make sure Vertical Sync is forced off at
    all times.

Uh, Matt, I count four ideas. That's "some", or maybe the higher end of
"few", but definitely is also a "handful". "Couple?" Nah.

You know, I discovered that the Nvidia Card has not been updated. Our I.T. dept. has blocked
users from receiving updates. Sighs...I have to check to see what updates are avail. for the chipset and firmware.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
