Are there BAD processors....?

I have been looking at buying some new computers for our design department
and am a little overwhelmed by all the various processors out there to
choose from. Between the AMD Athlons & Opterons and the Intel 4's & Xeons
my head is in a fog. Understood that some of these (Opterons/Athlons)
provide 64-bit processing in lieu of 32-bit.

My question is not necessarily which is the BEST, but more importantly,
which ones are the worst. Is there any of these I should stay away from and
why?

The systems will be running AC2004/MDT2004/3D Studio Max 6.0 with XP Pro OS.

Thanks a Ton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do NOT, I repeat NO NOT purchase a computer with an Intel 386 processor,
even if it has a math coprocessor!

Seriously, though, this discussion is mostly a matter of personal opinion,
so these discussions generally degrade into name calling and "I know
everything listen to me" posts. I don't think that you can go "wrong" (ie:
none of the processors are "bad").

If you do a lot of 3ds max 6, then buy something with dual processors (or at
least Hyperthreading) and gobs and gobs of RAM (between 1-2 GB). Generally,
you can narrow the field by setting the amount you want to spend, and go
from there. That will narrow the field considerably. Athlons are simply
not as competative as they used to be, but there is still a small price
advantage there. I own one myself that I am very happy with, but I would
have a hard time recommending one today compared to Intel's offerings. In
general, the more you spend, the better the system. The exception is 64
bit - it's still an overpriced waste of money in my opinion, but that will
not be true forever.

.. and stay away from that 'fake' chip, the Caruso, and those P3 mobile
chipsets as well (not to be confused with the Centrino, which is good on a
laptop).

I would look at the AMD 64 cpu. Unless, you plan on buying new ones again
by next summer. WinXP 64 will be out by then and you can put a terrabyte of
ram in there.
