Using an EDL to "notch" a captured tape

Does anyone know the procedure to notch a clip?

If you have a captured program from tape and you have the edl that created the tape, how do you get Flame to use the RECORD SIDE timecode of the EDL to put the edit marks in the captured clip (notching the clip)?

I used to do it back in the day (on Avid DS) but for the life of me, I can't remember. Plus I have not NEEDED to do this in forever!

Any clues? Can it even be done on the Flame (not premium)?

Thanks

Paul

Hey Paul,

Down and dirty way is assemble the edl with no source media just to have the cuts.  Drop that on a layer above your flattened injest.  Then use the keyboard shortcut advance to next cut (on all layers, nut just selected layer via playhead) and insert cut shortcut (making sure playhead is on desired layer).

So basically:

    • Skip next Cut - All layers
      • Insert Cut - Current layer (Flattened Ingest)
        • Skip next Cut - All layers
          • Insert Cut - Current layer (Flattened Ingest)
            • Skip next Cut - All layers
              • Insert Cut - Current layer (Flattened Ingest)
                • Skip next Cut - All layers
                  • Insert Cut - Current layer (Flattened Ingest)

Down and duirty like I said but works.  There is also an easier way to do it in lustre.  I have also successfully done this in flame before cutting up an episodic for cleanup, but it's been years.  I'll see if i can play around with it to jog my memory and get you a better solution.

Thanks Beau, but I knew that. I'm trying to find the CORRECT way this is to work. 😛

It'd be nice to have it automated like we USED to do it.

But in a pinch, you are correct.

We're going to call you in a second with another option on EDL import that might work for you.

DONE!!!

Thanks to Craig M. in support to help me with this (no offence Beau).

Select the CONFORM tab.

Choose Load and Edit New EDL

Navigate and select the EDL

turn on the EDL Conversion button

just below that button is a drop down button: MAKE SURE that Record as Sourc TC is selected

click on LOAD

On the next page that opens, click ASSEMBLE and you weill see a message statiing some segments are unlinked (that's fine)

Click Exit EDL

Now you should see your timeline, but everything is unlinked.

Click on SET SEARCH LOCATION button and navigate to the location your files are (I actually had DPX files, not a tape. But tape should work this way too) and click SET

Under the Match Criteria button make sure ONLY the Source Timecode is selected and make sure Strict matching is OFF

You should have a check mark next to all the clips

Click on Link Match Sources.

That should be it!

Worked for me!!

Cheers!

Paul
