Link to reference QT

I'm working on a 2 1/2 hour film  1920x1080 23.98.  I"ve linked to a 1280x720 QT thats a reference for the cut and its on a top track. The system is unworkably slow.  Other than caching the reference clip by actually importing the media, is there another way i can link to this reference without taking such a toll on the system?

What format is the movie?  I'm going to guess h.264 with a really long GOP.  If you don't want to cache it, you're left with converting it to something I-frame if you want it snappy (ProRes, DNxHD.. h.264 would still work but with much closer keyframes, like a second or less)

I've had faster playback by converting reference quicktimes to ProResLT and then linking. To get an even more accurate match on ganging, I usually bump up the reference to 1920x1080.
