HD to SD

Hi

I work for an advertising company and wanted to know if I was converting

from HD to SD in the best possible way. We create the master spot in HD but,

because ads are transmitted in SD (bloody ridiculous!) we have to down res

the masters. We create an SD partition within the HD project and take a

hard commited version into that where it is obviously resized.

The resize settings we have always used are:

PRECISION: 5.25

CRISP/SOFT: 1.25

We find this gives us the best result for pictures and text.

Obviously there are buzzing issues when we watch the resized ads. So bad

sometimes that the director won't watch them in SD! 🙂 Does anybody

else out there do this differently? Or is it just an inherent issue that can't

be avoided.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Gaf.

The process is pretty straightforward. No extra partition required (unless you're using Inferno v1.3...circa 1996).

Take your HD clip into resize module, select whether you want a letterbox or center cut, everything else can remain in default. Process the clip. If your HD master was 23.98fps, you'll now need to Add Pulldown to the Resized clip. You will have an SD Master @ 29.97fps. The SD clip will look "fluttery" on a computer, due to the 3:2 pulldown, but it will broadcast fine.
