Another expressions how-to posted

Hey Folks,

I've uploaded another Flame/Smoke expressions how-to. This one is quite long and didactic, but covers a lot a ground. It's more of a "Class" than a tip, and is in three parts ~10 min each. I tried speeding it up, but found that the material just didn't lend itself to being brisk. I could be wrong, it could be boring, and more experienced artists might agree, although even if you are an old skooler and don't have expressions in your bag of tricks, this is a good place to start.

If you can spare the time, it (they) will bring you from a basic link all the way to a pretty high degree of complexity; trig functions, negation, and conditional returns of entire functions, AND you will know what all that means and how to use them.

I might have posted this (these) first, as it is a good starting place for "The Unexpressed" 😉 , but the counter thing was too tempting for a starter. The apparatus that results from following along is (arguably) not quite as cools as the counter, but this is more about "how" than "what".

I hope you like them, but lemme know what you think,

Interesting as always beak!

It seems like part 2 and 3 are not uploaded in HD, which makes it quite hard to see your expressions.

What language are expressions using inside Flame?

Thanks for pointing that out!

You were right about the SD thing. Apparently this is (was) a limitation of basic membership. I have upgraded and am re-loading parts 2 and 3 as we speak.

I don't know what language expressions borrow their syntax from, it seem like generic code to me. There is an expression reference in the manual/help. It is very useful for reference.

I don't really know what i'm talking about, but hey, my 2 cents:

i believe that:

There is somewhere (i don't remember) a "function" file where all the expression "operators" are defined, with the sometimes long code for what the operator does, how it is "named" and then what are the parametres you have control on. This function file might very well be a python one.

So the expression Language would really be what ever has been defined in the function file.

.. or the opposite!

Please someone correct me if i'm totally wrong!

Cheers

Stefan

Thanks Beak,

Good to get some practise in with expressions

There's something very satisfying and elegant about using them.

When it works 🙂
