When you apply materials to a solid some of these materials may have textures..
In a crowded and heavy model with many parts it can drag the system resources down.
So a way of turning off Textures would be desired to improve performance.. For instance the image below has a brick textured mapped to wall.. The only way to turn it of is actually changing the material (which would not actually be turning off).... to a material that contains no texture.
