Multiple animations in Maya Export?

Does the FBX plugin for Maya support multiple animations? If the humanoid.fbx model is loaded then saved, there is only one animation in the resulting file.

Hello Doug,

When you say "multiple animations", do you mean multiple takes? Or, several objects each with 1 animation?

Can you describe what you want to do?

Thanks!

Multiple takes. Importing the humanoid into Maya, then exporting it loses the takes and the names of the takes.

Hi again Doug,

What you are seeing is normal behavior for the plug-in. You can save more than one take into an FBX file, say coming out of Motionbuilder, but you can only import one take at a time. The following is from the FBX Documentation you can find online:

"Animation Take

Note
You can only select and import a single take of animation at a time."

So, when you import humanoid.fbx into Maya, you are only getting 1 take, therefore it's normal that you only get 1 take leaving Maya as well.

Carlos

This seems like a serious flaw in the support of FBX. All your tools should support multiple takes to be a true interchange format.

You are sooo right!!!

Maybe if each take was imported as different clip, in a separate track in the Trax editor? Wouldn't that better solution than importing only one take at a time? This way you would actually have inside Maya ALL the animation the fbx file contains!

This is only accessible from script... but have you guys looked into this?

FBXExportSplitAnimationIntoTakes

This allows you to split your animation up into multiple files on export.

I only use this for exporting into Unity3d... so no idea how importing into Maya or MB comes out.

Hi,

I've written a plugin for Max and Maya to allow multiple takes to be exported via your DCC.

Maya: http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm?ID=733924

Maya (OSX): http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm?ID=753688

Max: http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm?ID=701878

Thanks,

Michael.
