Why does DB dissapear when exploded?

Is it / was it built on a layer that is Off in the target drawing? Do you just loose the DB properties? Makes since since it is no longer a block. Is the layer Off or Frozen in a viewport?
I know; simple thoughts, but you did not exclude these.

Can you post a sample, either of the DB itself or of a drawing containing an insert of the DB that exhibits the behavior?
