Steve: First, I think the whole point of the groups is that everyone can read and learn, so I discourage strongly any direct replies. Hand drafting is a wonderful art (craft?)- but for me, being able to revise and redesign in Autocad is great, starting in 3D with ADT is ideal. I like addtional hand work on presentation drawings. If you already know what the design is and you are going to mount the drawing on the wall, grab the pens and ink! Bob PS: please come back in and join the discussion.

Steve, I was brought up on hand drafting and think that a finished hand drawing is a piece of "art" work ,But the functionality that CAD drafting has makes it invaluable
I was told by an older drafter that CAD was OK but was no longer a discipline like hand drafting ..well the discipline is still there it has just been redefined (layers /linetypes /textstyles etc )
I'm all for CAD , drawing boards are a thing of the past I'm afraid ..but hey thats progress for ya

If you are not doing any heavy design that would
utilize the many features of CAD and if you are producing plans/designs/maps
whatever, that are one offs and never need revisions then had drafting is
better. However I know of few who can fit these categories. I remember erasing
shields, erasable sepias, plans so smudged after multiple revisions they had to
be abandoned and totally redrafted. I believe that for most real world
applications CAD is a better choice.

it is possible to make a CAD drawings look like a
piece of art. I've been doing CAD for 15 years and just cant do hand drafting
anymore. when I try it looks like he!!

Too bad! My skills have waned, too... but as I
create Lisp to do tasks, I try to wrap a bit of Hand-drawn elements into
them.

The advantage to CAD that I see (after 15 yrs) is a
rapid revision cycle... the initial drawing takes as long as by hand. Most
users expect the initial drawing to be FAST... not so! But changes can be
made and alternates preserved as you go.

And the 'talent' is in sorting skills... sort these
layers from those, these blocks, those styles... refine them and it's pretty
easy to do really complex work.

Hand drafting is better ONLY if speed, accuracy, and cost are not a factor. In our industry, the only pretty thing is profit.

One big thing is that with CAD you're usually using
accurate measurements, i.e. either osnaps or typing in distances, vs. measuring
to what may or may not be the correct line on a scale. And dimensions then
accurately reflect that.

Too many more to mention...
