VoloView Express will not view R2004 DWG files.

VoloView Express only views DWF files earlier than the

DWF6 type

Express Viewer as you state will only view DWF file, but

views all DWF types.

FULL VoloView 3 is requred to view R2004 DWG files. The

VoloView 3 package is not FREE. It supposedly will view

all the R2004 vertical products DWG files and Inventor 7

files.

The free Volo View Express does view both DWG
and DWF files; however, it does not view the new AutoCAD 2004 DWG
files. Volo View Express is being discontinued, so it is not going to
be updated to add AutoCAD 2004 DWG support. Similarly, Volo View Express only
views older DWF files. The DWF format has recently been updated so that DWF
files can be plotted to scale if they are generated with that
intent.

The Autodesk Express Viewer is the free viewer
from Autodesk. You are correct in that it is DWF-only, but it is free and does
view the latest DWF format. It does not have the markup and measurement
capabilities of Volo View. It is Autodesk's recommended solution for plotting
DWF files to scale, although some issues have been noted in the
newsgroups.

Now if you really need DWG viewing in addition to
DWF viewing, Volo View 3 will view AutoCAD 2004 DWG files. The Volo View 3
package is being offered for $49. It does work well on DWG viewing. There are
"object enablers" that are free of charge and can be downloaded and added to
Volo View. These enablers enable Volo View to view more intelligent CAD formats
such as Inventor files; however, people have had mixed results with these
enablers. Given this and that the Autodesk Express Viewer is easier to download
and install, I would go with the Autodesk Express Viewer and define my own
process to keep original DWG and generated DWF files in sync.

There will be no more versions of VoloView Express (the free viewer). It
is being replaced by the Express Viewer which as you have noted, only
supports DWF.

If you still want to view DWG and DXF files with redline abilities,
you'll need to purchase the full version of Volo View which is going to
be upgraded to support the AutoCAD 2004 file format version.

You might also want to note that for a limited time, upgrades and new
customers alike can get Volo View for $49.00 (USD) until I think July 30
of this year. After that time, a copy of Volo View will run you $195
(USD).

If you check Autodesk's web site under "products", click on the link for
VoloView Express. The page for VVE has a link to Autodesk's e-Store and
the special limited offer promotion of Volo View.
