Submittal Delayed Because Reprographics Unable to Batch Print DWF's

Our submittal was delayed due to the fact that most reprographics
facilities are not familiar with DWF's. Theres currently no free program
that enables batch printing of dwf's so we were unable to guide them in the
right direction. We got a call yesterday from http://www.palrepro.com asking
us if there was any other way we could send them these files. So i had to
re-print 721 dwg's to .plt files.

The unfamiliarity with dwf printing is a problem with most reprographic
facilities I contacted around our area. What a mess.....

Then the new version of the dwf viewer, available from the autocad website,
doesn't allow for any redline marking as the previous version. Turns out the
only way to markup dwf6 format files is via the full blown volo view 3.0. I
wonder why they took it out (trying to get more money it seems). Our 60+
buzzsaw users that use the viewer were unable to view our dwf6 format files
unless they upgraded their viewers. Once they did, the complaints rolled in
that they had lost redmark capabilities.

Thanks Autodesk for making our project such a nightmare.

1. We at Océ are working on adding support for DWF6 to Océ Publisher - a
tool that will be free of charge and downloadable from the web. There are a
series of improvements that will occur over time:
a. We are currently beta testing Océ Publisher that can be used in
conjunction with the Autodesk Express Viewer. You will still use to use
Autodesk Express View a DWF6 file; however, when you wish to print it, you
will select the Océ LDF Driver for Windows like any other printer. This will
convert the DWF6 file to an LDF (Layered Document Format) file that you can
save locally or send directly to your Reprographics Shop. The Reprographer
can then print the file using Repro Desk Server which understands the LDF
file format.
b. Near the end of the year, we will be updating Océ Publisher so that it
can read DWF6 files directly. This will eliminate the step of viewing DWF6
files in Autodesk Express Viewer and printing them. Océ Publisher will
convert them to LDF files and allow you to save them locally or send them to
the Reprographics Shop.
c. Next year we will be updating Océ Repro Desk Server so that it
understands DWF6 files directly. This means you can send the DWF6 file to
the Reprographics Shop and not even have to mess with Océ Publisher.
I know this will take a while, but I want you to know that your plight is
not being ignored. I also recognize that DWG->DWF->LDF is yet another copy
of the data; however, the LDF file also contains delivery, billing, number
of copies, and other metadata that is not part of DWF6. Think of LDF files
as PLT files and you get the idea. We at Océ do not expect people to archive
LDF files or share them. They are merely a transfer mechanism from the end
user to the Reprographer.

2. Autodesk stopped shipping Volo View Express because of the download size.
In its place for Buzzsaw users, they offer a free "Powered by Volo View"
solution that has markup capabilities. You can buy Volo View 3 if you want
to, the ProjectPoint client will find it and use it, but Buzzsaw users can
use the "Powered by Volo View" solution.

Hopefully this information will help make things less of a nightmare.
