Can't install Express Viewer?

I can't install Express Viewer on a machine. When I attempt to do so it
tells me that it can't register "AdPageView.dll". Any ideas as to why?

Thanks,

Robert Grandmaison

Are you trying this on Windows NT/2000/XP and not logged in as ADMIN?

Dean,

I've tried logging in with full admin rights, but still when I attempt the
install, I get the same message.

Here is the procedure to fix the problem:

Install Express Viewer, ignore the error.
Uninstall Express Viewer, get another product (JUST KIDDING!!!)

Install Express Viewer, ignore the error.
Get to the "DOS" command prompt.
Change the current directory to the %WinDir%\System32
Type in the following two commands (assumes default installation folders)

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Autodesk Express Viewer\AdView.dll"
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Autodesk Express Viewer\AdPageView.dll"

Express Viewer will now work correctly.

NOTE, you *cannot* run regsvr32 in any other location, or the registration
will fail. It *must* be in the System32 folder.

Yeah, I've done about 12 fresh installs of Windows XP on various
workstations... getting real tired of dealing with this issue. Don't ask me
how I figured it out either, because the braincells are a'dying.

Autodesk is blissfully in denial ("it must be a bad install of the OS"
bah!).

Curious, was this on a WinXP SP1 workstation?

Yes, I do believe they were all XP SP1 stations.

Any idea why this is happening? Is it an Autodesk thing, or a Microsoft
thing? The fix seems easy enough that if it were an Autodesk thing, they
should be able to remedy it easily enough.

My guess is that its an Autodesk thing. Maybe the AEV installer forgot to
use quotes on its regsvr32 command. By doing it manually, it seems to work.
You have demonstrated that.

Scott,

It is not as simple as that. The regsvr32 will only work if you use it from
%WinDir%\System32. Try it from Express Viewer's folder (which should work)
or any other folder, and it will fail.

Depends tells us that Microsoft's MPR has a problem, but that only starts
the finger pointing.

R,

(Just in case you are monitoring this thread rather than the one in the
express.viewer group)

Might I ask which build of the AutoDesk Express Viewer you are installing?

You can find that by going to Help -> About and the Build Version is the
number of interest here. I am presuming that it is build 3.1.0.92 but I
would just like to be sure...

many thanks.

Nope. The build I have been installing is 3.1.0.78.

Just *how* am I supposed to know that there is a new version without going
thru the tedium of "registration" for the dozenth (? ) time?! This is
real informative http://tinyurl.com/j2cz NOT.

R,

Well, one way would be to use the automatic update functionality built into
the Viewer itself.

From the Help menu, select the 'Check for Viewer Update'. If there is a
newer version of the Viewer available, you will be informed and given the
choice to install there and then. If you decide to do the installation, the
current instance of the open Viewer will be closed and a newer version
downloaded and installed.

Further details about this are given in the "Checking for Viewer Updates"
section of the Viewer Help

I hope that this helps.

It would still be nice to have versioning numbers accessible on the web
page.

Jason, I just performed a FDisk'd install of WinXP Pro SP1. Installed EV
build 3.1.0.92, and got the same behavior. FWIW.
