EV control in PowerPoint

Perhaps I'm missing something obvious, but I can't get a dwf to display in
PowerPoint. Couldn't with version 3 either. The help file says: To run
the control, from the right-click menu, select Autodesk Express Viewer and
then choose Run from the secondary menu. But no such option shows up.

Can't figure it out.

Here are some instructions the my AEV collegues gave me when I asked. 🙂
1. From the "Insert" menu, select "Object…".
2. Select "Autodesk Express Viewer Control" and hit "Ok". This inserts the control into your slide but since you are in "design" mode, all that will show is the control background color with a DWF logo in the middle.
3. Now right click on the control and from the "Autodesk Express Viewer Control Object" submenu, select "Properties".
4. When the property page comes up, hit the "Browse" button and select the DWF you want to view. If you leave the "Do you want to embed a copy of this file in the parent document?" item checked, it will actually embed the DWF right into your Powerpoint document so you won’t need the original DWF anymore. This is great if you want to give the slide show to someone else who might not have your drawing. Also note that you can move over to the "Color" tab if you want to change the control’s back color.
Now when you run the slide show, the drawing will come up live in the viewer. Unfortunately we are currently unable to show you the DWF when in design mode as our control doesn’t have a window to image into. That is something I had hoped to fix this time around but didn’t happen.

Thanks Chris. That's pretty much what the help file says, but it doesn't
work for me. It works with Word and Excel, but not Powerpoint. Weird....

Only if I'm lucky too.

No joy with AEV4 and PowerPoint 2k SP3. The property dialog doesn't even
become active in the Controls toolbar when I have the control selected.

Hi Brian and Robert,

I'm with the AEV development team and tomorrow I am going to try using using
various flavors of PowerPoint on various flavors of Windows to see if I can
find some resolution to your quandry. In the mean time, I do know for
certain that AEV4 works fine in PowerPoint XP so if either of you have
access to the the XP version, you might upgrade and try that. Note that you
don't need XP to run the XP Office products (MS claims they will even run on
Windows 95). I'll get back to you regarding PP2k as soon as I know something
definitive.

With AEV 4, PowerPoint 2000 sp3 on Xp Pro sp1.

If I go via the Menu:

- Insert>Object>Autodesk Express Viewer
Control

- on the object>right click>Autodesk Express Viewer
Control Object>Properties

- choose a file

When I run the show the dwf doesn't load, just the
object with the "DWF Logo". (tried tick embed or not, makes no difference).

If I turn on the "Control Toolbox" Toolbar;

- click on the "more controls" button

- Choose "Autodesk Express Viewer Control"

- on the object>right click>Autodesk Express Viewer
Control Object>Properties

- choose a file

When I run the show the dwf loads (tried tick
embed or not, both work).

The dwf loads fine in AEV 4 and the Autodesk Express Viewer
Control Object works fine using menu Insert>Object method in Excel & Word
2000, just not in PowerPoint 2000?

Robin,

Good show! I wasn't even aware of the "More Controls" button, and using that
to add the control makes it work correctly. My software environment is
identical to yours.

Larry, it looks like you have something to help track it down now!

First off, thanks a lot Robin for finding this work around! I tried it on
my 2k machine with Office 2k and it worked like a champ for me too so I'm very
glad PP2k users are not shot out of the water. What is very curious is that it
should matter how the control is inserted into the PP slide. It turns out that
the way our control is activated when you run the slides show is completely
different depending upon which of the insertion methods was used (and obviously
one of them works and one of the doesn't). I will go ahead and log this
as a bug so that the next release can honor both activation sequences. But
in the mean time, thanks again Robin and I will make sure that our customer
support are informed of this work around too.

This thread's been dormant for a couple weeks, but
I thought I'd mention one other issue I found with the express viewer control in
PP.  If you saveas a pps file (PowerPoint Show), the control doesn't
work.  In fact, it even hoses the control in the original ppt file.
Very strange.

Brian,

I just tried this out and it seems to work fine. I used Power Point 2002
with SP2 on Windows XP Pro. Could you tell me what Version of Power Point
you are using and the exact steps as if you were creating this presentation
from scratch?

Example (this is actually what I did):
Open Project Point and add 3 slides
Added text to sheet 1 and 3
Saved the Project as a PPT and PPS
Closed Power Point and ran the PPS
Reopened the PPT
Selected the 2nd slide, added the Autodesk Express Viewer object from the
insert menu --> Object
Located the AEV object where I wanted it on the sheet (note the entire
object is on the sheet).
Right mouse clicked on the AEV object, selected Autodesk Express Viewer
Object --> Properties
Browsed to the DWF to display.
Selected OK to this dialog box.
Ran the project, viewed all slides
Saved the project as a PPT and PPS
Closed Power Point
Ran the PPS, no problems.

PowerPoint 2000 sp3 on both Windows2000 and WindowsXP-Home. I did basically
the same thing you did except only one slide and I used the Control Toolbox
toolbar-More Controls button to add the AV control as explained earlier in
this thread. I embedded the dwf file. When "playing" the pps file, the
viewer shows up, but the content is missing. Along the top it indicates 0
of 0. The dwf actually contains 20 pages. The original ppt file only
messed up on the WindowsXP box though, not the Windows2000 box. Is
PowerPoint2002 what you get with OfficeXP?

I don't have WinXP-Home with PowerPoint 2000 readily available here, so
could you try a few things.

1) try the exact steps I outlined below.
2) when pointing to a DWF, point to a single sheet DWF.

Let me know if you have problems with this, if not, then in the same
PowerPoint document, point to the multi-sheet DWF and re-run.

I can't do it EXACTLY as you outlined. I used the More Controls toolbar
though. No joy. Using a single sheet dwf, not even the viewer frame shows
up. Just a blank slide. However, when you switch from slide to slide, you
can briefly see the control placeholder blue globe image flash.

Brian, I have verified that AEV 4 does have an issue with Project Point
2000. Unfortunately I don't have a workaround for you short of upgrading to
the next or latest release of Project Point. I will let our development
staff know there is a problem.
