The bold text doesn't really stand out to me, and it's difficult to quickly scan a page and see the threads which have new posts.
Compare the top image to the bottom image.
The bottom image illustrates what it would look like if the updated thread links were a different color in addition to being bold. Much easier to see IMO.
I like your idea. There is also a small difference in the little "speech bubble" icons:
But again, the effect seems too subtle to catch the eye on a quick glance.
Well, I thought I had found a solution....
Chrome will let you write your own custom CSS file (I'm sure FireFox will also), and as long as you know the class name you want to modify, you can redefine it locally - as shown above.
Unfortunately, this forum software uses the same class name for ALL unread messages on ALL pages, so it's a bit of overkill. I'm going to stick with it for a while though, because it does help me see unread messages on that particular page.
