file servers

Is anyone using any of these new file servers (quantam "snap", or seagate
"nasraq", etc.)?

We have one computer dedicated to file storage and are thinking of
upgrading, but I hate the thought of wasting money on extra stuff.

For our needs, could get the server and tape backup for about $700 with out
paying for a monitor, video card, audio, keyboard mouse, etc.

just want to know if anyone has heard pro/ cons

One person here said they were using a few of them happily a while ago, I've
asked & not found others. I know someone who used snap servers a few years ago
& thought it was unstable but I'd guess it's pretty smooth now, they run a
preconfigured linux & that's supposed to be very stable. I don't know how
secutity can be controlled though since it's sort of a fixed setup.

J,

I've been thinking about getting a Snap Server for our winnt network
and moving the drawings/projects to it. Before doing this I wanted to
find out any pros or cons. For instance a winnt server is supposed to
have more "robust" file serving capability than a winnt workstation.

J,

We started using a Snap 4000 last summer without major problems. I will
consider another when necessary.

There were however minor problems.

Documentation was not very good & it took me a while to figure out how to
set it up and set permissions.

I had trouble getting it recognized across the VPN. Tech support never
answered my emails & I gave up on phone support after 45+ minutes on hold. I
did figure out a solution on my own.

HTH,

Lysle

Great, thanks for the reply, how much do you charge for tech support? I'm
guessing you set up an NT domain to control file permissions? We also need to
get it recognized by MS VPN.

Lysle,

Are you using it for storage of acad drawings that are opened and
worked on and saved continuously every day? How many autocad users
hitting on the snap server?

Thanks,
