clearing unused layers!

when i set up my project folders, i usually just do a "save as" and name my new drawing. well, the new drawing has alot of unused, unwanted layers that wont purge out for some odd reason. i run an audit on the drawing as well. and when i use quick select to try to locate the items associated with the layer, it says that there are 0 items with that layer name. anyone know of a command that cleans up unwanted layers??? i've tried purge and audit.

Something in your drawing has those layers in it. Unexploded blocks maybe?

Hey Stephen;

If you have access to Express Tools, laydel works admirably - but you want
to make sure that all Layers are On and Thawed, as Matt alluded to. We don't
doubt your competency one iota, but stuff happens.

I'd suggest fixing the template so this doesn't happen anymore. The layers are in use, probably by unused blocks. Might be easier to start a new template from scratch and use something like Design Center to bring in the layers you "want."

If you have a layer froze in a view port it will not let you purge it also.

EXACTY...Any layer frozen in the viewport is still recognized and can not be
purged. Layer Delete, the express tool Don suggested is the best, but be
careful, you can delete objects drawn in that layer so caution should be
used.

if you have only model space to worry about then try wblock (-wblock since
2002) all ent in the dwg.
it always worked for me with the most cases...

I had that problem once. It turned out to be a layer nested about four or five blocks deep. If you explode everything until there is nothing left to explode you can pinpoint where those layers are used. Then just go back to the unexploded drawing and take care of the problem area.
