bylayer or not......

I have someone here that says it is better to have less layers and make changes to lines by using the pull down (not bylayer), as apposed to having more layers with everything bylayer.

What do you think?

Hey Corey, did you go back and browse this thread I linked in my other
reply?

We have been debating this for a long time....... 🙂

Heyyyyy...

funny how things change.
I wasn't necessarily a nay-sayer,
but I seemed skeptical.

now look at me...

I wish that had the courage...
Would be a tough transition for an office of more than 1.
I get it,
but trying to teach the concept to my staff?
It'd be like teaching paperspace all over again.
ugh.

Hey Evan;

I'll have to go over that when I've got my whit's about me. Too much time
spent on getting my taxes done the last two or three nights.

I'll require far more sleep to be able to keep up with all of the thoughts
being expressed in the 1st thread you pointed me to.

And it's not so much me (and those like me) that would need to "buy-in" to a
change in the system re. Land Desktop. It's the folks I work around who
enjoy their "add-ons" they've needed to come up with to produce their plans
in the most time-efficient manner for the Civil communities use -
Contractors, Surveyors, Plan Checkers, etc.

Thanks for pointing those threads out to me, and I WILL go over them in the
near future.

Must apply sleep soon though, in order to keep up with everything in my
life. 🙂

Don,

It was short and to the point but Corey has the answer. It is bylayer or
death to the infidels for most people, there is no changing peoples minds so
I don't usually go into details 🙂

See this thread, http://discussion.autodesk.com/thread.jspa?threadID=457616

I think it gives a pretty good synapsys. That is an ADT discussion however
that rationale can be used for all. It is time for AutoCAD itself to
include a display system but it will not happen because even ADT people do
not use it. In actuality the argument is mute because there is no way
people would give up bylayer no matter how good another system is.

And here is why I think this is a mute point...
http://discussion.autodesk.com/thread.jspa?messageID=640963 Note this was
back in June of 2002! Wow talk about getting nowhere in four years...

In a nutshell, as you move to more object based drafting the drawbacks of
bylayer become more pronounced, it is time for a change.

So you've crossed over into the "STB Zone" - or what?

Explaining the reasons why might help us non-believers.

No problem John,

I have a bunch of million dollar ideas that have netted me $0.00. Actually
that would make them $0.00 ideas 🙂

I believe it was Steve Martin who said "how do you become a millionaire,
first get a million dollars...." Don't think that relates to the topic but
I like the quote 🙂

When it is all said and done I really don't care if everyone else uses
by-layer, no skin of my nose. The problem is as long as there is no support
for enhancing the display system it will be as it is now and was since
inception a great and powerful tool that was allowed to wither on the vine.

I don't want to forsake the power over xref colours for ease in output/screen colour control using .stb

Why? To control the "look" of xref'd layers during the design phase.

We frequently use XREF's only as an aid to design. These XREF's will never be part of the final drawings, but are used during the
design phase for checking clearances and such. It is helpful from a "display" standpoint to push these elements to say a single
unused color, say 251, that will still allow them to be seen, but only in "background". If the color is "hard-coded" into the
element, this flexibility is diminished.

my brain is fuzzy from lack of sleep combined with beer... but why not a plot by layer (assign a plot colour and lineweight to a
layer) versus screen colour. Thus change the screen colour and all objects display differently, but plot according to object
importance/presentation. back off plot weight and/or colour and you get plotted backgrounds without sacrificing the concept that new
walls are green, demo'd are red etc

having everything bylayer means you have adopted the fascist's state layer policy wherein the neofascistas in the AIA perpetuate the
sheep/slavery paradigm by kowtowing to the decrepit old guard who have no practical knowledge whatsover about cad except to
infiltrate and corrupt the creative potential of future members thereby enshrining their outdated imperialistic dogmatic designs

I once sat on the "futurecadranters" society committee and witnessed firsthand the disruptive and divisive techniques of the

caustic atmosphere of digital bylayer poison.
